Ok, so far I only have Coleman lanterns and one Optimus that will take months for parts to arrive. I want to try something different, so why not Tilley. However, I’ve been surfing the bay and can only really find pre-fettled ones and they are usually exceeding $160 USD and I’m not really looking to spend that kind of money. So does anyone know where I can find Tilley lamps that I can fettle and aren’t more than like 110-120 USD? Thanks

Are you talking internationally or in the US? in the UK we have Gumtree, Shpock, FB obviously, local auctions, car boot sales etc but many sellers don't like to post.

I meant in the U.S. but heck I’ll ship from the U.K. And I’m not asking for listings or whatever. I just want to know where I can search and actually find good ones.

There are still plenty of bargains to be found over here if you keep looking, is craigslist similar to ebay over there?
Maybe you could do a few swaps with a collector over here Colemans for Tilleys etc, i know a few have done in the past.

Hi there @Levi Tomey . Ive collected a few colemans from the usa, in Australia we have tilleys, probably most comon is the x246 chromium finish, A and B .
Colemans were made in Australia as well.
I dont know much about postage cost Australia to usa, customs or tax. But ill send you one, not going to talk $ as this is not ethical, you can fettle it yourself, i have a few spare, PM me if you want to . And maybe trade. All in the name of larterneering

There you go Levi, that's one avenue that's opened up already

We have plenty of modern Colemans here but pre 80's we could probably do with more, i'm sure some earlier Coleman stoves would go down well too.

:-kWhy the random mention of a dunk test. Also, interesting story. When I took apart my optimus, I’d never even known that pressure lanterns were separate from wicked lanterns (which my grandfather actually collected and I’m stuck with hundreds of railroad lanterns). So, anyway, when I got it apart I just put the everything on that you need for pressure and also the generator. I then proceeded to FILL IT WITH WATER, pump it up and spray it all over the kitchen ceiling. (Very fun to dry up)

I expect its used elsewhere but its the first i heard of it when i got into lamping,
I wish my Grandad had left me a collection of railroad lanterns, maybe you could add some pictures in the open forum as i bet there are some nice ones,
The Optimus fountain! luckily it wasn't something harder to clean up, i bet it was a shock to start with,
I can't think of anything that i did like that when i started out, i was in a rush one day and put milk in the kettle instead of water once though

    @Levi Tomey
I'm pretty sure that you could sell off some of the railway lanterns and get one or two Tilley X246b projects?
Do they not sell for much over there?.. Alternatively, you could get some Coleman table lamps to work on? There are some reasonably priced ones on ebay usa alone?:-k

I think postage over the pond to the USA would be the killer here...

Yeah, shipping is a big problem in this climate, it's cheaper to use UPS than the normal cheap 10 day + alternatives

Is that someone you would use, Paul?

Just out of interest, what would a ballpark figure be for shipping to N.America?

I used to use UPS all the time, then they went expensive, still use them for quality items as they are the best, no checks, tracking all the way and very fast too......Now with this zombie virus, the cheap shippers are dearer than UPS, so presently i'm using them...Roughly £ 46 for 2 lamps 6kg 50 x 31 x 27 cm.. through Parcel2go
