Virtual Newark - 30-31 May 2020

If you pop outside your tent at 2211hrs you should be able to see the International Space Station (ISS) pass over, heading West to East, followed by Space X Dragon at 2217hrs (potentially visible on the horizon in a South Westerly direction).

 

Time to shine brightly, I have lit the fire so no one gets cold.

Settling down to a perfect evening. If you are looking to the sky for space stuff be aware that there is some mild light pollution in the UK tonight that might hamper things.

George's Anchor had an accident last week. Too much furious pumping brought the hanging basket bracket and the lamp down off the wall! Turns out it had run out of paraffin, but luckily only the mantle was lost!

 

No dice - it's been clouding over here steadily for the past hour or so. Thanks for the 'heads-up', though...

Tell me all about light pollution - the neighbour's got a damned street light in his back garden :-

 

Bad shot but the best I can do! I'll be out of action for the next week now! Talk about pain.... my wrist just gave out... Took me almost an hour to lite these!
I wanted to display more but sadly I can't. No Colemans, didn't feel up to filling any, they're all empty.

Meetings due to end midnight UK time but I'll be hitting sack before then plus my phone/camera/mic is using power faster than I charge it. I'll leave the session open - it may continue as long as there are participants or it may shut down at midnight. I'm unable to edit the end time.

Great to talk with you all - been a great alternative to the real thing!

 

Had a very pleasant virtual Newark, started with the bacon sandwich at lunch time.



Then moved onto the sausages and burgers on the BBQ tonight.

On the fire table (left to right) are Akron 132-42, US Mil Spec converted, Coleman 252 1944 Mil Spec, Coleman 252A 1952, US Mil Spec 1977, Coleman 335 1970's, Vapalux M320, Coleman 201.

In the trees (left), Coleman 228D, 1950, Right trees Petromax 826, and Petromax 828E. In the rear tree Petromax 829 (Bundeswehr) dated 1959. A fine evening!

 

Well I'm doing it all again tomorrow! - only the Zoomposium bit was today.

I've got a bit of arthritis in my wrists and hands but generally nothing too bad. However, since Wednesday it's been excruciatingly painful in both hands, particularly at the base of my right thumb. I wondered what had kicked it off so badly and then, like you, I realised it was all this fettling and pumping up over the last week or so. It's eased off today so I got a bit done, thank goodness. I think I'll need to do a bit more in the next few weeks and start all my joints moving again...

I was unable to join the Zoom meeting yesterday, but I will try and get a few pictures in of some lanterns and stoves tonight. Cheers to everyone who participated in any way, shape or form. Collective team effort.

 

Well, despite having been dickering about since 5.00am, mainly with Tilley and Bialaddin bowlfires, my breakfast was a bit late again - early enough for it still to be breakfast, though:-



I'm so glad to have fettled the little RM stove yesterday - it meant I could have two slippy eggs with my breakfast. I cook them in a second frying pan because I don't like those little black bits on 'em...

 

Great fun yesterday, just sitting in and listening mostly although I did get about 25 lamps out around my garden, I lit 6, not quite the real thing but I enjoyed it.
I see a very nicely lit short handled 246 in your picture, looks like its all running very well, looks good under that Tripod. David, Just let me know how you want paying.

Yes, the X246 Knucklewarmer performed well last night, burning for about 4 hours without needing any further pumping up after lighting. I'll be in touch...

 

Well, it just wouldn't be Newark without a pizza would it? I meant to do this last night but time ran away with me!


The pizza oven I bought at Aldi, Newark maybe three years ago. Not quite as portable as Sime's Uni but a good bit cheaper.

Anyway:-

Not bad, I thought, without any expert tuition from Simes and his missus!

Well, it's been so lovely here this weekend I've decided to stay overnight and maybe go home in the morning. Earlier on, I had a word with that nice Scottish lady in the office and she says she doesn't mind me having a fire tonight - as long as I don't singe the grass...

Tried to get a Veritas Superb lit up, had it going a few days ago, but just no luck tonight. So here I am with my dram and my wee ML98.

 

Spot on! I did breakfast Sunday morning using my Dutch Oven and Coleman 424 out in the wilds of my garden, just to extend the weekend. Cracking thread, brilliant.
