Hi again So it’s taken me quite a long time to get my hands on a FL6 and it’s in great condition. I’ve striped off all the old paint ready to get it back to original. But I need a little help if possible on 3 things What was the original Colour Can I get decals for this And... the top bit, like the chimney has been flattened on one side. Have you any idea how to get it back to it’s original shape? Thanks for any help Cheers Glen
@Glen Campbell Original colour black. I’m not sure about the transfers. When you pull it apart, you can panel beat the hood from the inside. Cheers Tony
The only thing wrong I can see with that is it's sitting in the stand the wrong way round. Other than that, well done! Whereabouts are you in Durham? (please don't let it be Barnard Castle!)
Well done, looks good. Although I would rotate the glass a little to get rid of the red bar halfway ...
Hi Guys, Much appreciated, Em No I'm not in Barney, as the Locals call it The reason I was asking about the colour is that when I stripped it down there was 3 layers, Top was Black, then it was white, then it was a Kacky kind of light beige which I assumed was some kind of under coat. I thought these lights might have been white in their life? Also, is there anywhere I can get a Kit to replace all the seals? DOH! I have just spotted the kit on the right of the screen! Ill get one ordered Thanks Tony, Too scared to tackle the Chimney, in case I make it worse
I just like to know who and where the 'local yokels' are - there are quite a few of us around here although they're mainly stovies with a few lamps - obviously, unlike them, I've seen the light! We have been known to meet up occasionally, although not lately. As you probably know, we've got New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Toronto around here but not Wichita... Usually black and later models were silver. But Tilley would paint them any colour you wanted if you bought enough. Sometimes companies painted them in 'house colours' after delivery and many fire brigades painted them red or yellow or whatever. Some collectors like to, er, 'put there own mark' on them - perhaps someone had a fondness for cacky-beige... That'll be coming to you all the way from High Spen - told you there were a few of us around here! And, yes - probably best to leave the vent cover. Most FL6s had a hard industrial life and things fell on them from time-to-time. It won't affect the running and I'd call it 'character' rather than patina but it's the same thing... Decals have been reproduced in the past - I think I got mine years ago from Ross before he morphed into 'The Fettlebox'. Other folk have done them, too. They'll be available but I don't know where right now - sorry...
Thanks Tony, Thanks David Ah! Hi Spen, not too far from me, I’m in Bearpark The fuel tap has me baffled a bit, as there seems to be an extra bit on it that I’ve never seen before. Any idea why it’s there?
Was watching Bargain Hunt the other day and they had one in the auction. I think it got to 160 pounds. Was an old show, from around 2013 I think.
It is the basis for a paraffin preheater. Have a look in the reference gallery to see what it would look like if it was complete. BR49-BR49A-BR49B
It won't work because most of it is missing. Don't ever turn the little rectangular tap when the lamp is running because a jet of kero will shoot out and probably ignite. For safety's sake it needs to be removed and replaced with an ordinary control cock. No, I've never seen one on an FL6 either - probably the complete unit wouldn't fit under the FL6 reflector. No, for the reason stated above. Hope that helps...
Thanks Guys, Really appreciate the info. Ill remove this Stop Cock from the lamp and pop an ordinary one in. I have an X246, Ill maybe pop it on that for fun. Have you any idea where I might get the missing bits from, so I can use the Igniter stop cock? Thanks Again Glen
In a word, no - sorry... The idea of these was that the paraffin in the tank could be used to pre-heat the lamp instead of carrying around a small bottle of meths and the lighting torch. That was fine as far as it went but paraffin isn't as volatile as meths so there's a different lighting technique required. It seems that, generally, people either couldn't / wouldn't read the instructions or have the patience to wait for the preheater to do its work properly. In frustration, they removed the shroud so that they could use the remaining part with meths - the shroud then was lost. Sometimes, the main part of the preheater was also removed (as has happened with yours) and thrown away. These require the longer 169 vapouriser to accommodate the length of the preheater. I've never tried it but I can't see there'd be sufficient space on the shorter 606 vapouriser...
Thanks David, Ill keep my eyes open, to see if I can pick bits up, Ill need to hunt out another stop cock
IF you have all the parts : yes it will. As said it is a pre heating system on paraffin. Biggest no, I find is the fact that is smokes like hell, so you get a smokey glass too.
