I am new to this forum and I would like to say hello to all the members and to admin for allowing me join. I am currently restoring an old primus stove and will post pictures as I go. However I would like to ask any member if they know of any reviews on the New Tilley lamp X246B-B by Tilley International. It certainty looks a great bit of kit, but its price is fairly eye watering. Hi @peter kenny Welcome to the forum. £150.00 for a new X246B brass is a pocket whalloping amount of cash and the quality is ok but nowhere near that of the older X246 Guardsman models which can be picked up from £20.00 upwards on eBay. I didn’t wish to put you off from buying a brand new Tilley, I did in 1992 and still use it today. Had I have known then what I know now I probably wouldn’t have splashed out on a new one. The Guardsman was primarily brass construction with steel cage and steel enamelled hood. The modern (1964 to present) version has an aluminium frame to tank nut, control cock and pump fittings and are nowhere near as robust or for that matter so good looking. Also the X246B is known for the base plate ballooning and the seam splitting, quality being lost at the expense of cost cutting. Have a look at Tilley and Vapalux/Bialaddin lanterns in the reference section to give yourself an idea of the differences and styles. Should you choose an older lantern there is a wealth of friendly advice and knowledge here to help you get it running. With regards to your Primus stove, we love to see them being brought back to their former glory but you will be better off visiting our sister site Classic Camp Stoves, direct link at top the page. Peter, welcome hope you enjoy the forum. There is plenty of friendly knowledge on here, ask away. Re new Tilley, although not my field of expertise, this may help. May I suggest, if you have the ability to restore a stove, the same principles apply to a lantern. I'd recommend you look at restoring a earlier model Tilley, rather than buy a brand new modern version Far more interesting for a start! Others will suggest the best models to look at in terms of price/spares availability and ease of restoration. As an aside, I purchased a brand new modern Petromax Lantern when I started this game. Now I have a better appreciation of pressure lanterns,I find it is least used in the collection. It's build quality is no where near older Petromax's from the 1950's onward. Thank you Jeremy for your spondulicks saving post.I have to say the thoughts of such a spend was causing me some anxiety so to speak.It great to receive your advice as I am by nature a fixer upper and take a huge joy in it. @peter kenny Hi Peter and welcome from the Scottish Highlands. I’d only repeat what others have already suggested, look for a better made older Tilley, they’re good value and very robust. I don’t think you’ll have any problem picking one up locally, start asking around and I’m sure someone will have something lurking in a shed that they’ll be willing to part with. Afternoon Peter. Have a look at the Original German made Petromax Lanterns. A great looking lantern and versatile if you require it for camping, cooking etc.
