This glad shade/globe came in the same box as the Tilley 106 Porkpie but I dismissed it as a wickies lantern glass. But, on closer inspection it has a securing lip the same size as Tilley onion globes. Question is, does it have any place on a Tilley lamp or have I created a monstrosity? And a suplemental question... should the 106 be fitted with both an onion globe and the cream shade, or just the shade?
Either way, I love it. Unfortunately, I don't have any Tilley table lamps so I don't have info on the union/shade combo.
@ColinG You have a wealth of choice: TL 106: Shade; no globe; TL 106IP: Shade; 182 onion globe; top and bottom insect shield; TL 116: No shade; 182 globe. TL 116IP: No shade; 182 globe; insect shields. Does the tank have the black trim around the bottom? Cheers Tony
@ColinG Its all good really... is it for show or do you plan to use it? Hum...wasn't there a thread not too long back where folks were sayin' how flameproof some hurricane lamp glasses were? I would use both a globe and a shade, then the globe could act as protection? (the globe being generally less dosh)
Yes, but that is a gas light glass not a hurricane lamp glass and I have used the same type of glass on a Tilley and they can take the heat. Not all gas light glasses and globes can take the heat from a Tilley, so in my opinion, it's best to post photographs of any which turn, it's likely that some member here will have tried them.
Thanks Jeff Sorry i thought it woz a Hurricane lamp...i'd better book an app for specsavers i spose : (
Thanks Jeff from me too... I might use this glass on the 106 Porkpie and keep the cream shade safe. I'm in the middle of refurbing another Tilley table lamp and I could use the onion globe on that but I need a gallery first!
Hello Colin, yes, Tilley galleries are often in short supply, I usually keep the Tilley shades for display and I prefer the light with just a 182 globe fitted, I obtain the heat resisting gas globes/glasses whenever I can and the Coleman glass which goes on the 168k table lamp etc., will also fit into a Tilley gallery, those Coleman glasses sometimes turn up fitted to old Calor gas light fittings.
Just to add my tuppenceworth Colin, whatever that long globe is, you know it isn’t a Tilley original, and I hate it! It just doesn’t look well on your lovely lamp. Sorry.
I think it's almost certainly come from a wickie-**** hurricane lantern of some sort. Cosmetic issues aside, you may find access for the lighting torch isn't easy...
Oh.... if you don't like it Jean, it won't happen. I'm not spoiling the look of a very original 106 with some old rubbish globe! I can feel some globe purchases looming!
Yes, but that type of glass was originally for a gas light, that is why they fit Tilley galleries, before Tilley made paraffin pressure products, they made various types of gas lights and the galleries for those lights have the same inner size as Tilley galleries and the globes/glasses were held in with 3 screws and this link shows the type of gas lights which I mean. caravan gas lights - Google Search:
