Can anyone tell me what was the Tilley SDR lamp made for? Its design with the double reflector? Thanks
I'm not sure this is the complete answer you were looking for but "Queensland Pastoral Supplies" advertised these a fair bit to farmers in 1949.
The two reflectors were supposed to produce a brighter, 'beam' radiating in all directions around the lantern. You can still see the same idea in use today...
Thanks for the answers folks. So they were still made for general use then, unlike the trackside lamps, spot lamps, flounder fishing lamps. and railway wheel inspection lamps. I did see that vapalux made a setup for collecting moths, so nothing to do with that kind of use then.
Seeing the old clips of the railway gangs working, I notice that different models were not only to reflect the light in a required direction but to also to shield in a direction. I imagine with 15 X246's running in a tunnel, it would be bright but nobody would be able to see. With the SDR reflecting a horizontal beam, it could act like a shield without shielding.
That's a new one on me - have you any details? I've seen moth traps with a bulb (I forget their name, now) so I suppose you could use a lantern instead where there was no electrickery...
