These AL8 are excellent, now I know why the railroads used them.

The Tilley ALs aren’t a strong suit of mine, but isn’t this an AL 8? I’ll have to look at my paperwork and get back on this.

    Cheers

I was told it was an AL9, but happy to be corrected.

It depends on how it's dressed, as @Henry Plews said:

    From a mid-late 1950s catalogue.

    Yours can be both:
    • With the reflector fitted it's AL8.
    • Without the reflector ("naked, as Henry said) it's AL9.

    Cheers

Photos of hood as requested, admittedly it's a CH1 hood.

I've been told that your stand is Kayen. You might want to check it out.

I just went out to the shed and grabbed these 3 stands.

I have not yet cross referenced with ones I have inside.

This is my theory so far.

    This is a Tilley one.
    All rivets, no welds.
    IMG_3664.JPG IMG_3665.JPG IMG_3666.JPG

This is what I believe is an "apprentice made" one.
Bad welds and two strips joined underneath rather than one bent strip.
    IMG_3660.JPG IMG_3661.JPG IMG_3663.JPG

This is what I believe to be a Kayen.
Neat welds and the bent strip welded underneath.

Buggerlugs' is not a Tilley but it depends on the arrangement underneath as to whether is is a Kayen or an "apprentice made".

There is more I could add so I may do a post next week.
Opinions or other observations most wanted.

I assume you mean Kayen apprentices?

No, I was thinking more like railway apprentices or the like.

Ah yes, I didn't think of that. That is probably a really good guess.

When I was a kid I used to tag along with my uncles that worked at the Chullora railway yards in Sydney. Good grief it was a massive place. They fabricated all sorts of stuff they needed at those yards. I can see apprentices been thrown in a corner to make up some of the stands.

What about the top plate weld. How does that look on your apprentice stands?

:) From what I have, apprentices didn't do top plates.

I still haven't looked at the ones inside though.
They are a long way behind other stuff and will take some doing to get to them.

Matty is right about the Chullora railway workshops. In the 1970s I visited the Chullora and Eveleigh railway workshops in Sydney, quite often. Amazing places!

Since I mentioned tagging along with my uncles to the Chullora railway yard memories of accompanying my brother on locomotive rides have flooded back. My brother was first a Trainee Engineman and later a full fledged engine driver, beginning circa 1968. From memory, Enfield was the depot he was mainly based.

I used to love being allowed to push the button that averted the brakes of the locomotive automatically deploying. (From memory) Whomever was not the engine driver, they had to press the button every minute. If you didn't press the button a warning light flashed. If you then didn't press the button an alarm sounded. If the button still wasn't pushed it was assumed the crew had been somehow disabled and the automatic brakes would come on and stop the locomotive.

Any time my brother and or his mates were passing by where we lived they would sound the horn, no matter what time of day or night. We probably lived a mile from the tracks and I assume as we could clearly hear the horn the poor blighters living right next to the tracks could. They used to do a certain sequence so we would know it was them.

Thanks Jean. I hadn't thought about those days in a long time. :)

It is tough to tell from the photos but my poor old eyes see a Kayen control cock. I have a feeling the tank may be Kayen too. Better photos would assist.
