Does anyone know when Tilley started to use the "made in EEC" logo on their glasses. And on what models. Regards, Dave.
From Wikipedia. The European Economic Community (EEC) was a regional organisation that aimed to bring about economic integration among its member states. It was created by the Treaty of Rome of 1957. So starting date 1957. Has to be post pork pie X246 or later.
That's what I thought but wasn't too sure. I have a X246b (dom 07/04) which had a cracked glass which was made in the EC. I've sinced replaced the glass with a good one. Dave.
If I recall correctly, I have Tilley 171 globes that are marked: British Made Made in England Made in UK Made in EEC. I assume that the British Made and Made in England predate Made in UK (the move of Tilley to Dunmurry), which in turn predates Made in EEC (the UKs entry into the European Community). I bought a stack of Tilley X246Bs (ex Antarctic) for the globes: all had EEC marked glass. Cheers Tony
Following on from my above post, I've managed to locate 17 stored Tilley 171 globes in the dark and cold. I think this is the order of age from oldest to youngest: Durosil "Made in England" - deep globe (3 of) [?1946-1960ish; Tilley at Hendon] Pyrex "Made in UK" - shallow globe (10 of) [?1961-1973ish; Tilley at Dunmurry] "Made in EEC" - shallow globe (4 of) [1973-ish onwards; UK joins the European Community] I know I have a GTC "British Made" globe somewhere. I'll continue the search. Cheers Tony
It could be that GTC is Glass Tubes and Components Ltd. The dates I'm getting are 1968 to 1978 and seem to fit at this stage. Not 100% sure yet. Still confirming.
I can confirm that Glass Tubes and Components Ltd made heat resistant glass in 1972 so I would call that confirmed enough. It would be nice to find a GTS catalogue saying that Tilley was a customer of theirs but life just aint like that.
