Hi there Just picked up this lantern Have installed two new mantles Every time I light up the alcohol to preheat the mantle It catches alight And burns huge holes in it I am now using methylated spirits which is better but still burns out the mantle leaving it with gaping holes This is my first kero lantern so am A novice The mantles I am using are Coleman no 21 They came with it at purchase
@Daz Have a look at my mantle here: Coleman 214A700 (1987, ex-Antarctica) The Coleman 21 mantle will be too small, I reckon. To start this lantern, make sure that the control wheel is fully shut (to the right). Pump 20 to thirty strokes into the tank. No fuel should emerge. Put metho in the spirit cup. Before it fully burns off open the control wheel. The mantle should come alight, then fully open the control wheel. You can then pump a few more pumps into the tank. Cheers Tony
@Daz I’m with @Brenneman, always burn Coleman mantles off with a match or lighter prior to preheating. The no. 21 mantle should be the correct one for your model, see here: https://www.oldcolemanparts.com/diagrams/214A700.jpg Regards Jeremy
@Daz 1. Put the mantle on and burn it off. It will hang loose and black. 2. Then preheat; pump 20 to 30 strokes. 3. Before the last of the metho has burnt off, open the control cock. Your mantle should then begin to take shape and whiten. My offer above remains. Cheers Tony
If you put a match to it it will start to burn then smoulder. A bit of both, really. And then when it’s finished it will look like a black floppy mess. Tony
..And when it is burning off/smouldering it will stink of burning cotton so best not to do it in a kitchen.. ...And Welcome to CPL!
