New lamp

Could anyone tell me if it's normal for brand new tilley storm lamps to look like this? Dings on the lid and partial embossing of makers name?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Tilley quality certainly isn’t what it used to be and the embossing I could live with, however I would probably take up issue with them about the quality of the enamel hood.

I believe Tilley only assemble lanterns and all engineering and manufacturing work is outsourced these days.

You have nothing to loose and all to gain by having a chat with the lads and lasses at Tilley.

Thanks very much for your response Jeremy. I too can live with the embossing...kinda makes it look a bit weathered.
I have emailed Tilley; I'll let you know what they say.
Other than that I love the lamp.

Have a look through the reference gallery and you will soon find there are a fairly wide range of storm lantern models from Tilley over the years many which use the same service parts as the model you have. I have to agree the current model (X246B) which was introduced in 1964 isn’t the best design or quality compared to the versions from the 1940’s of 1950’s however my first (and only new) Tilley is an X246B from 1991 and is my most used dependable lantern and I definitely have a soft spot for it. Just wondering what prompted you to purchase a brand new one? Mine was for group camping.

Hi John and welcome to the forum from the Scottish Highlands. As Jeremy has noted, the older lamps are of a better quality. Maybe you find one for comparison, well it’s an excuse to have another!

 

Welcome and if i got that Tilley i would add it to my collection, that's for sure enjoy it.

I bought the lamp brand new because I wasnt sure about restoring a used lamp...getting parts, leaks, etc.
As an ex boy scout/army cadet/RAF Regt, having used them on many occasions, I thought I'd buy one to enjoy with my wife and provide something for the kids to argue over when the time comes...ha ha. Here's a pic from last weekend...

Hi.
Spoken to Tilley. They offered a partial refund...or a brand new hood. I'm taking the new hood.
Just ordered the bug filter and 5 new mantles.
Happy fella.
