Good day everyone! I am having a hard time finding mantles for a couple of my Coleman 321 lanterns... I have been searching a few stores locally and even looked at the Coleman Canada website (I live near Edmonton, Alberta), but no one seems to carry the Coleman #99/999 mantle's anymore. Did Coleman stop making these? If they did, I wonder why since so many lanterns out there still use them. What are your recommendations for replacement mantle's? I took and used a #21 mantle, but I would like one that is going to give me the same light output as the 99/999 mantles. Thank you for the help!
Hi @Johnathan ! Well, i just did a search on ebay and there seems to be a seller in Canada selling some # 99/999 mantles 'Peerless' brand, so my advice is to search on ebay for Coleman 321 Good luck!
The Peerless 24A mantle is the comparable replacement to the Coleman 99. And, in my experience Peerless mantles are superior to Coleman mantles and can be purchased at Old Coleman Parts.
Thanks everyone, I took and ordered some Peerless 24A mantle's from eBay as the listing said they were Coleman #99/999 replacements and worked with the 321 model lantern. I still find it weird that Coleman would stop manufacturing this mantle since so many lanterns out there are still running that use this mantle.
This is your Canadian vendor ... the " nakedpicker " .... mmm .. top seller NIP PEERLESS 24A MANTLES 6 PACKS OF 2 (12 MANTLES) 400/500CPS TYPE #99/999 STYLE | eBay He may be able to help you if nought else happens
Coleman had definitely stopped the production of the #999 mantles a while back. Those are thoriated/radioactive and if I've not mistaken, Coleman had some legal issues troubling them concerning the manufacture, distribution, usage and waste disposals related to production. It was, at least partly, due to health and safety concerns raised by the public. The #99 is the newer equivalent of the #999. I'm not sure if these are radioactive or if Coleman had stopped the production of these as well.
Seems that the mantles for small gassies which Coleman used to supply (did they buy up CampingGaz?) have all but disappeared. They were small/medium/large usually in packs of three. I wanted some small ones but no local camping shops stock them any more. Just plastic junk with LEDs in.
As far as I know the #99 mantles are still made. The newer ones are non-radioactive. I have several 2 mantle packs in the newer wrappers, so I assumed their non-radioactive because of the newer packaging.
Maybe I stuck my foot in my bog mouth! I can't find the #99 mantles on the Coleman site so perhaps they've been discontinued after all...
I found this vendor in NZ had the best deals once you do the currency conversion. Specialists in Peerless mantles for gas pressure lamps and lanterns
Yup, I just checked and that is exactly who I bought them from! I have added them to my favourites list so that I can buy more if needed. I bought 6 packs of the 24A mantle's
And you know, I'm sure last year when I was looking around in the local stores and on the Coleman Canada website, they still listed the #99 mantle's. I wonder when and why they stopped making them. I plan on keeping my 2 lantern's that use the #999/99 mantle's around and working for as long as I possibly can. Guess I/we will have to go with another company to buy our mantle's...
The new Peerless mantles are now made in India and run by a different management. Peerless was originally manufactured in the Philippines. They were available in both radioactives and non-radioactives. From most of the reviews I've known, those from the former maker were the ones that earned them their excellent reputation. I don't know if the newer-mades are as good as the earlier ones. I'm pretty certain that the Coleman #999(thoriated) mantles would most likely outperform the newer #99s and #21s in terms of the kind of light that a lot of us would prefer. I can't say if they would have a higher light output from the candlepower sense but they most probably would appear 'whiter' than the non-radioactive equivalents. Should the newer Peerless mantles be unavailable or if you feel that the lighting qualities to be anything less than their predecessors, you could always try out those cheap Chinese-made mantles. Although they are less durable, I find that the light from these (the thoriated ones) could easily match those of the old Coleman #999 mantles.
Here's a #21 compared to a #99. Wider but pretty much the same length. I've used #21's on a Coleman 335 (collar specifies a #99) and you get a bit of a halo around the mantle but otherwise works fine. A #99 on another 335 pretty much eliminated the halo, which I expect your 24A Peerless will do as well. Last group of Peerless I got about a year ago were still bright, but broke easily and burned into the most lopsided of shapes. Mike.
