    Hi All

I have seen a few posts on here before but...

My first tilley i bought a 1979 X246B will run fine for the first two minutes but will always start to pulse badly.

All the seals are fine, clean tank, delivery tube clear and vapourizer is clean. Ive even used other tubes, hoods etc and it still pulses,

Any suggestion or shall i find a shot gun and blow the thing away?

    Cheers
    Adam

Hello Adam, if that lantern is fitted with an aluminium control cock, then that is most likely the cause.

They are very poorly made and because of that, they restrict the flow of the air and fuel mix.

Try fitting a fully restored pre 1960s brass GF., control cock, or one from a lantern which does work well. Jeff.

    Hi Jeff!

Well i tried another control cock from my X246A

And it still pulsed but not as bad,

I know its a bit silly but still on i tipped the lamp to its side 1-2 seconds and then back upright and it stopped pulsing?!

    Any ideas?

    Cheers
    Adam

What's the frequency of the pulsing? i.e. how many pulses per minute...

Hi Adam like Al i think there could be still some contamination at the bottom of the tank or there could be some debris in the bottom of the tank or more likely a problem with the fuel pick up tube, it could be partially blocked with carbon or some debri in it or there may be a leak in it in the top of it around the air space of the tank, you could take swap the tanks over so all the aparts on the problem lamp are fitted to the tank of a good running lamp

Hello Adam, there is often dried muck on the inside of the tank and when fresh fuel is put into the tank, it loosens the muck and that causes problems.

Put some paraffin in tank and then add some ball bearings, then shake rattle and roll the tank about.

Then pour the contents of the tank into a clear container, if you see loose muck, then repeat the process with fresh paraffin until no loose muck appears.

Leave the used paraffin in a clear container for about a week and all of the muck will settle to the bottom and then gently pour the paraffin through a strainer into a clear container so that it can be used again.

As I have mentioned before, the main problems with the X246B lanterns are the control cock and the pump and I recommend replacing them with a pre-1960s brass GF., control cock and a Guardsman pump, Jeff.

    Hello Adam,
You simply need another reliable Tilley and just swap the parts over. Ither create the problem on the good lamp or other way round.
    Maurice.
