I went to the old Family Farm in our Airstream over the last weekend, here is a good picture of the Airstream with lighting from a Coleman Kerosene and a Coleman 200A gas lantern. The kerosene is to the right.
Hi 'Burner, Airstream and Coleman, two timeless, indestructible examples American craftsmanship. Nice! BTW, what part of the US are you from? Dan
Alabama, I know this will not mean much to the guys in England, but I am on 20 acres which have been in the Davis name since the 1840's. For the USA that is history.
I'm not sure why you have to be an Englishman to not get this. It doesn't mean anything for a Swede either...
Well, I'm an Englishman, Christer, but I think I've managed to work it all out. BYB lives on a plot of land amounting to 20 acres which his family has owned for around 170 years. Phew, now I need to go and lie down after all that effort...
BYB, I hear you in my own way since our family roots are pretty shallow here in the States. My father's side is pre-Revolutionary war with Loyalist and Patriot leanings; and my mother's parents came over between the first and second world wars. The longest that I can personally remember living in one place is the 7 years that I was stationed in Washington DC. I actually miss my nomadic life now that I've retired, but I always wondered what it would be like to have a deep attachment to just one place. I do miss the island that I was raised on, but there's no going back now.
I think the point is that 1840 is history for the US but the recent past for us in Europe. Mind you single family occupation of land for 160 years is not that common anywhere. ::Neil::
How odd it might seem, I actually worked it out too David. My remark was more a satiric reply (obviously unsuccessful) over the fact that it only should be limited to "the guys in England" to not find this fact strange... I'd rather stretch that to Europe (as Neil also said in his post).
Oh yes, I got your point alright, Christer. I was just making another one that although the UK/Europe might be the 'mother country', we're not necessarily country bumpkins. Incidentally, I did wonder how many acres you're on...
Depends on how you count. My own personal land is only about 30 acres. Our family farm is much bigger of course.
Well, I glad you guys enjoyed the post with all the comments, now I need some help, I won a 2nd Tilley on eBay, it is a Guardsman, dated 10.59. It is missing the tube from the valve to the mantle. Where can I get this part.
Sounds like you need the vapouriser (= generator in the US) which is Part No. 606. You could try Base-Camp or eBay UK where they regularly appear. I was going to suggest Tilley themselves, but for some strange reason, they don't seem to have them listed on their website. Hope that helps...
And there was I thinking my quarter acre was a fair size. I did not realise we had landed gentry here. I shall have to be more respectful and do a little forelock tugging. Very cool. ::Neil::
Thanks, for the direction on the parts, I found everything on Ebay UK. This weekend I was able to clean up both of the lanterns I have, as Neighbor had said in one of his post I must wait for parts. I am posting a pictures before and after, the after includes another of my toys made in England.
Yes, 1953. I bought it from original owner 5 years ago, he bought it in Paris, France while in stationed there in Army.
Very cool motor. We have a couple of serious lamp collectors who make the chasis and bodies for those. I have been in their workshop and the level of craftmanship is awesome. ::Neil::
