Hi all, hope everyone is well. Sorry if this has been covered in previous posts... but... My Tilley 246A on some occasions doesn't seem to want to give its normal light but by just turning the control cock down slightly then back up again it will burst into full life. All washers have been replaced, pricker rod cleaned etc, i'm wondering if it's just the age/wear on the cam inside the control cock itself that causes the discrepancy?
Hi Stuart...Hope you are well too! It does sound as if there is wear affecting the fuel flow...not uncommon on the aluminium control valves.. Have you tried swapping the valve, i.e. switching the valve with the one off your other Tilley to see if that helps to narrow things down? Regards, Tim
This sounds a bit odd. In normal use, the control cock should be turned fully anti-clockwise i.e. pricker rod down, so you can't turn it back "down slightly" - it should already be down as far as it should go. In this position, the pricker is fully retracted out of the jet and the maximum amount of fuel is flowing. If a bit of crud then blocks the jet, you turn the pricker control clockwise and then quickly back down again. The pricker rises, pushes the crud out of the jet and then quickly moves back downwards out of the way again. You're not running the lantern with the pricker partially advanced to compensate for a worn jet, are you?
Thanks Tim. i shall try swapping with another Tilley and see where it leads. i suppose that's the important requirement of acquiring many lamps, the need to carry out important research with different parts. 'Important Research' what partner can question that when another Tilley turns up at the door!!
?? not sure David. I close the control when things warm up then pump initial 10/12 pumps and then 'open' control to start, it lights and i continue with 60/70 pumps. as i say sometimes it just doesn't seem right and i close control slightly then fully open again and things roar into life properly. am i getting something wrong on start up?
Errm, well, i'm not sure but possibly quite a bit?...not for me to say, and all that..but 'Good Luck'...
I'm definitely confused now. What you say you're doing in your last post is correct but it contradicts what you say you're doing in your first post! The control cock on a Tilley has two functions - controlling the fuel flow i.e. on/off and advancing/retracting the pricker to clear the jet. When you say "sometimes it doesn't seem right" that sounds like crud is blocking the jet. In that case, you should quickly turn the control cock clockwise to clear the jet and then equally quickly, turn it anti-clockwise to resume the fuel flow and the lantern instantly relights. What you describe is exactly what's supposed to happen i.e. normal and not a problem... I'm not sure about your concept of "Important Research" either, Sooner or later, your partner will start feeling the need to carry out her own 'Important Research' into shoes, handbags, daft sunglasses, nail-bars and hair extensions etc., etc...
If you're "slightly" closing and then quickly opening it then it sounds like it's partially clogged. I'm no Tilley expert but I've had Coleman lanterns do this and they turned to be slightly clogged.
oh right. Thank you, that's great. if that is normal then good stuff. being a newbie to this Tilley bug thing i'm grateful for the guidance.
if it is the original vapouriser that came with the lamp..i.e. well-used, then you could try giving it a clean? Or just get a new or nos one? Lots of options!
'shoes, handbags, daft sunglasses, nail-bars and hair extensions'....... if I can match that level of important research I’m going to need a bigger garage!!
