As some may recall, I have posted about this lantern before. Now, however I’m just diving into this and I don’t see a pump and I’m confused as to how this is supposed to work, so, oh holy Coleman collectors, shed your knowledge upon me.
You need an external pump...similar to a bicycle pump. If you go to Coleman collector's forum there is a link to Old Coleman parts and you can find a pump similar to this. You pump it through the fuel filler cap which is in your photo near the red cable. The fuel cap has a check valve in it to hold the pressure when pump is removed.
You will have to secure the tank (called the fount) without damaging/denting/scratching it. The figure 8 fitting will have to be removed...it unscrews. Make sure you note the exact placement of the parts that will come off. After that the rest is quite obvious...remove the valve, burner tubes etc...clean rust in mild citric acid solution. Lots of info here. Coleman Collectors Forum
Always puzzles folk the first time. The figure 8 fitting is located to the air baffle so when it unscrews the baffle plate also turns. ::Neil::
Join the forum and ask in the classifieds if someone has one to sell...they usually do. Some members have squirreled away dozens.
@Levi Tomey Try eBay. They are usually all over the place. You can usually pick one up cheap. Just have to keep an eye pealed...
Am I right in thinking that's actually a pump for a Coleman iron? It'll work OK on a lantern but you'll have a bit more pumping to do because the lantern pumps were around twice the length. Please correct me if I'm wrong...
You are correct, David. But as Coleman usually only requires 30 to 40 pumps, the iron pumps are a good alternative to the longer ones. Tony
Yes, but it would have been more helpful to the original poster (who is very new to lamps and lanterns) if you'd written 'similar to this but longer'. Hence I found the need to add my two penn'orth to what you'd written...
@Levi Tomey Yes! Accidentally! I was viewing the bay just after getting a deal for my Quicklite.. I was able to find a listing but the description wasn't telling me that the pump leather is working or just nice for looks. I figured perhaps just look for those cheap plastic hand pumps for kids' balloons and move on. So I thought why not look for other stuff like R55 gen, since my lantern comes with a Q99. Google suggested me to old coleman parts and somewhere on the page I saw a thumbnail to the pump! BTW, a nice box just arrived today and comes with a lantern in it
Old Coleman parts is a great website. Also if you’re a fan of Coleman I suggest joining the Coleman collectors forum if not already.
@Levi Tomey I'm not sure if i will get more Coleman lanterns.. the Quicklite is my very first. The big reason why not to for me is because of the lack of availability of the fuel here where I am. Well, I could get the kerosene ones but why would I get another kero based one when Colemans are a different kind of lanterns altogether Until I can find a constant supply of fuel for them, I would not get a next one. Right now I'm running the 327 now on kero+naphthalene mix and my Sea Anchor test mantles. Awaiting or R55 gen shipment. The irony, of all things important, it was the R55 i missed in my parts order
I guess my Quicklite had such good caretakers in the past. She arrived not long ago. No dents on the tank. Pretty clean, just dusty and the light oxidized patina look. I've gotten worse, especially Pmax clones in the past. There isn't any numbering on the logo on her. She still had some fuel in her, seems clear, I just fired her up after making sure she wasn't leaking. And of course she was pressurized when she arrived First light up in i don't know how long… she didn't tell me anything. Derusted and sprayed the steel parts. Just finishing her leftover fuel, very clear clean looking fuel. I got no way to dump the fuel out. Tipping on as usual doesn't work. Sea Anchor mantles shrink so much till they look like the size of #21.. Perhaps its fated that my stock of Sea Anchors were meant for her…
Perhaps you could try to convert a Coleman to kero. You can get a preheat cup and new gennys to make pretty much any Coleman kero.
@Levi Tomey Actually the next one i would like to have is the 252 milspec. However, i haven't found any way to change the burner assembly to a kerosene one and maintaining the single mantle burn. I've read 220 burner fits but that will make a 252 look like 220 instead
@Levi Tomey Here is an air pump for your Coleman Quick Lite. It’s from Old Coleman Parts OldColemanParts.com :: Uncategorized Parts :: Brass T-Handle Pump Reproduction I have one of these and they work very well. Cheers Pete
The T handle pump listed is for the Handy Gas Plant (HGP). It will work just fine on the lantern but is as much oversized as the iron pump is undersized. The lantern pump is roughly the same diameter as the iron pump, just longer. The HGP has a 2 gallon tank and requires you to pump like you're working a bilge pump on the Titanic. It will certainly pressurize a lantern without much effort.
Sudden craving! Has anyone noticed what these Coleman 200A "Christman lanterns" are selling for on eBay? $200, some as high as $600!! These are the ones with the green font and red top! I don't get it...
Even coleman clones fetch high prices now.. We can forget about looking for brass fonts or pristine porcelain enamel hats for a while
Oh man. It’s been a month since I even looked at cpl. It’s like walking into the sunlight after being in a pitch black room for days. Anyway, I got the 327 running nice and bright sitting next to my 228c. Still need to call Fred about some mica.
