Decided to give the Pork Pie a proper run last night. Think it might need a new vaporiser as I could smell some fumes of it and it was burning very brightly, even more so than my other lanterns using the same mantle. Anyways it was a great evening and another fantastic weekend since April having a Tilley lit, sometimes twice.
HI @0P30, welcome on board! These old washing machine barrels give a lot of heat, don't they? I fitted a 60liter drum on mine (as a chimney) as I sometimes have stuff from gardening to burn. Great fun! But now, it would be just a bit to hot to use it, we have daytime temps hoovering around 35°C for some days now. To hot for me....
Welcome @OP30 You've got a good one then. It's the other lanterns which are at fault. There's no harm in having a new vapouriser in the spares box but if the existing one were on its way out, there would be a halo round the mantle and as things get progressively worse, there will be yellow to red flames burning outside the mantle which will become blackened with soot. Assuming you're using clean fresh fuel, if you can smell fumes it won't be the vapouriser, there's a leak somewhere. Are all the joints tight ? Before tightening loose joints, smear the threads with copper or nickel based grease which will act as a seal. If you didn't take the the burner apart to clean it, don't. The screw threads on the air tubes and the mantle spigot are often burnt away - they come apart but won't go back together. Nice photo by the way. Henry.
Apologies only getting to reply now, will take some time getting used to a forum again. Thank you @Alex Smith @Wim @BigStevie @JEFF JOHNSON @ROBBO55 @Henry Plews @Fireexit1 for the comments and welcomes. Thanks Pat
