Went to Tilley's web site to price parts and was surprised to see that they do not have any complete lanterns for sale. Does this happen often?
Hi Al i was looking on there web site last week and i noticed they never had a full lantern on there list all only spares and asseries, may be they stopped production of the lanterns over the christmas period
Hi Al, I did see them on there website for sale at £120, Chrome Red or Brass, this was around November? Maybe with all of the sales from Ebay forced Tilley to stop production of lamps and just carried on with the spares? Adam
I do hate to see any business falter, and I'm just hoping that it's a lull in inventory. I have to wonder why they have not diversified into other products (stoves, etc) where their experience with generators and the like would be useful. I also wonder why they are so very expensive given that their reputation for quality has gone down. Coleman outsourced some of their parts, but they are at least assembled here in the U.S.
I'm not sure as to how Tilley funcctions since leaving Belfast. If there is a works, I don't know where it is - but doubt it is at the Frimley, Surrey address. My guess, and it is only that, would be that it has batches of the various parts made by contractors as and when required. Does anyone know anything about its current operations? Ian
Oh, they did, Al - they've been producing stoves from the very start and still do today. You'll see them all in your copy of Jim Dick's book when it arrives. On top of those, they produced and sold many models of profane stoves as well as tents, camp kitchens, pans, irons, wickie and non-wickie convection heaters and maybe other stuff as well - even a hollow-wire system at one point. I'm sure I've posted some of their general camping pamphlets hereabouts...
Ah we do know how to spell and trust me we do mean profane when it comes to cannister gassy crap. Tilley moved back to Frimley and are operating out of the room above a supermarket there. They have little engineering experience and whilst they have had ambitions to make some older obsolete parts from the tooling they have it has never happened. This may be the beginning of the end but I hope not. Mind you high costs and falling sales is what closed Vapalux in the UK so the writing is on the wall. ::Neil::
I managed to get into hallowed ground above the sports shop at Frimley in about 2000. There was certainly quite a lot of manufacturing equipment on shelve there then. I got a chrome case for DN250A Iron then. Maurice.
Good news folks, just had a quick look at the Tilley website and they have complete lamps for sale again. Further info, they are advertising brass and red finish.
