Thanks to fellow member @MG I am now the owner of two more Veritas 350 A's - one nickel plated with a green enamel top hat, the other cream/yellow with a plated hood. Here's the before images...

    Veritas 360 Yellow.jpg Veritas 350A.jpg

    Thanks Mark.

I have started on the nickel plated one first as it seemed the easier of the two.

Here's what I've done so far...

The rim is marked 8, 51 so I assume it was manufactured in August 1951. I haven't checked the seals yet but the pricker needle is intact and works.

I also made a new bail as the original was missing. It's easier to make 350 bails as they don't need any springiness. It's not perfect but it looks close.

PS my long suffering wife was making food while j was taking pictures hence the ingredients all around the lantern!

Next I need a globe but I'll probably use a Coleman 220 glass as they will fit at a pinch.

I stole the air mixing tube (the 2 part J tube bit) from the cream/yellow 350 so I need to source one of those if anyone has one. I could make a copy of a 350 bail in exchange if anyone's interested.

I've started on the cream 350.... lid first as it was quite tarnished...

I used Harpic Max X10 and a brass wire brush and it came up ok.

Hi colin I recently fettled one of these and obtained a globe from Pelam.de in Germany but the only problem was the postage cost more than the globe but a perfect fit

The mantle went a bit crooked but other than that it's pretty bright and stable with no Halo, so the jet is good.

So... they're finally both going after various alterations and additional parts, washers etc but here they both are...

The eagle-eyed among you might have noticed the non-standard globe fitted to Mr Cream. It's not a standard issue (shocking I know!) but it fits perfectly and gives a pleasant diffuse light that I rather like. Of course, lighting it can be a bit of a pain but it's perfectly possible and the globe was cheap... well, cheaper than a genuine Veritas that's for sure!

Colin, was all this nice finish on both lamps hidden under the muck as per your before shot? If so, it serves the doubtful to think wonders once in a while, doesn't it? Something I still need to understand is how your nickled lamp here has nice engraving plus a nice decal as well - is this standard issue? Also, the cream lamp seems to have the engraving painted over, and no decal or sticker on the other side?

    Thank you for sharing, Mike

    Hey Mike,

Unfortunately the cream/yellow 350 had to be repainted as the grime and grot had seriously damaged the original paint surface. The colour isn't perfect but I left the underneath as it shows the original paint. The cream and my other green 350 have the Veritas logo stamped into the metal rather than being etched and were painted over out of the factory. Some Veritas lanterns have both a stamped logo and a multi-coloured waterslide logo such as the nickel plated ones. I have one 350 and one Superb that have both a stamped logo and a multi-coloured waterslide logo.

I have found that nickel plated founts can often be restored to a very acceptable condition a you can see. I have used GSR (George's Stove Restorer) which is citric acid mixed with wallpaper paste to remove the tarnish and discoloration. If you search on CCS for GSR you will find the recipe. On the latest 350 I worked VERY carefully so the waterslide was left intact!

    Hope this helps.

    Regards
    Colin

    Colin, thanks for the reponse.
I gave in to curiosity and bought a presumably ex-dutch army lamp coated in at least to layers of drab green. Impossible to see any imprint in the tank if there. I was sort of shocked to see a brass tank with a steel bottom - this is where all the condens is settling after all. That is downright cheap!

Nevertheless, the lamp, a 350 for paraffin, seems little used, has a healthy pricker and an intact glass with Veritas logo.
But as a whole it looks awfull, especially when seeing same lamps with a nice green coat and stickers in the Gallery.
So I am planning to strip towards a brass tank, and I read your thread also to see what I might expect from under those layers of green.
I also noted the similarity of the ventilator with the Primus 1020, and indeed, with some manoeuvring I can fit the Primus hoods. Not checked, but I guess the globes will interchange too if Radius 119 items fit.
But unlike my 30's Primus, this Veritas ventilator does not have an inner steel separator or shield for the similar burner assembly; so far I have not seen an inside piccie of an overturned Veritas 350 ventilator.
    Could you help?

    Mike
