The black plastic knob either unscrews on the older lanterns or pulls-off on the newer lanterns. It is best to grip the spindle with pliers when doing this. Then the knurled cap can be unscrewed and the o-ring replaced. The old o-ring is often stuck in the cap and can be winkled out with a needle.
Thanks for the help, worked as the both of you told me. I have since replaced the oring, and fired up my Tilley for the first time, I will be posting a picture later today.
Yes they do. Be careful not to damage the cam inside though and grip the spindle before unscrewing rather than forcing it against the cam. ::Neil::
Ok, thanks for all the help from this site, I now have a working Tilley Lantern, here is a picture with the Guardsman and a couple of my Kerosene Coleman Lanterns.
A tip here might help. Sometimes those knobs just won't come off but you can seal the gland with PTFE tape without removing it. Just back off the knurled gland nut and wind some Teflon tape into a string and wind a few turns around the spindle and then replace the gland nut. That will give you a seal without risking damage to the cam. The lighter water tape is best for this. The gas tape is perhaps a litle thick as there is not much room inside the gland on a Tilley. ::Neil::
