Hi, I am sorting out a few things and this bail on a D 1938 Coleman 249 lantern is unlikely to be original. The lantern also has a brass horseshoe pre-heater cup which has a small pad to protect it from wear from sitting partially on the cage frame bolt whereas it should be the round aluminium cup. So some changes have occurred.

My question is does anyone know anything about this odd bail or where it comes from? Thanks

    Hi @Sedgman
The bail looks to be an aftermarket addition and it really doesn't fit the hood's profile very well, however I have no idea of its origin.

Would you show a picture of the preheater cup please. I have examples of the 249 with 4 different styles of preheater cups.

    Cheers
    Pete

The bail is not the original one for the 249 that's for sure. Here is what should be on the 249

As for the preheater cup there were several different versions on the 249.

    Cheers,

Thanks Norman and Pete for your comments.

Pete, My first thoughts with this bail was that it was rubbish and I tended to think it wasn't a good fit. The photos I provided above do not show the fit properly. Attached is a fresh photo and as you can see it is not as far off the mark as initial glances suggest. I am interested in your thought that it may be an aftermarket item, and I am also wondering if it could be from a similar, but not the same lantern type or even manufacturer.

The brass horseshoe pre-heater cup is certainly in use on 249s and I do have an early 1945 war years 249 with the same cup. I just thought that in 1938 it probably should be the aluminium cast job. I am aware of the small brass round ones too so I look forward to knowing what the fourth type was. I also wonder whether the Australian made ones differed.

Anyway my main interest is in whether anyone else has seen a bail like this. I should point out it holds the lantern up by the turned ends directly under the hood brim.

    Thanks 20201001_152510 - Copy.jpg 20201001_152525 - Copy.jpg
