These three lamps have come up for sale on eBay ("Vintage Lamps With Original Glass") a short drive from me. It's a buy it now listing, so I think OK to post the link? The one on the left seems to say Chalwyn, the one at back has a Coleman sticker next to it, not sure about one on the right. However, one on the right, which is the one I like, also looks to be in the worst shape! I mentioned my M320 to a relative the other day and they mentioned that they would quite like a Tilley-style lantern. How hard would it be to refurbish one or all of these? What does it involve - bit of sandpaper and a lick of paint, or enamel...? I realise that this is a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question, but any advice would be appreciated. I am not great with my hands but I do fettle bikes, chainsaws, lawnmowers, etc. and do basic DIY stuff. Also any information on the lamps themselves would be great. To tell the truth, have been inspired by the wonderful work posted on here by some people. I don't think I can match that, but it might be a nice little winter project, and lamps would be a lot easier to work on at the kitchen table than lawnmowers... Cheers Dan
Tilley X246A, Bialaddin 300X then a random wick lamp, could be a Chalwyn. They would restore, however there is very little you can do with the hoods.
It all depends on how far you want to take things and what you want to do with them? You do see far worse Tilley hoods than that brown one... Black ones are readily available.. The Bialaddin hood had seen better days but it's possible to get ones from Korea? It all starts to add up the further you want to go with things... Personally, I would see what the seller's 'Best Offer' is.. There are probably folk on here that may have lanterns for sale for a lot less!
Thanks Gary, Paul and podbros. I was thinking of giving one to the aforementioned relative (for use and nostalgia), if I could get it cleaned up and working properly. Also, while it probably doesn't make financial sense, I thought a refurb might be an enjoyable and fairly undemanding job compared to (say) stripping down a carb or something like that. But if the tin work isn't sound it would seem that refurb isn't really an option, and you'd end up just buying a hood, in which case you might as well buy one in decent nick in the first place! I'm amazed to see clean M320s going for hundreds of £ on eBay - think I paid £58 for mine. They're pretty utilitarian pieces of kit. Maybe just look for a clean-ish X246 of some description? There's a few not so far away, like this one (buy it now).
Yep, I was thinking £30 - on a good day with a following wind! Many folk here can sell you better for half the price...
Thank goodness you got some sensible advice here and can save your money for something better and cheaper.
I’m in agreement. They’re all their money at £30. I think the seller being a bit more than over ambitious with the pricing!
