Tilley FL6 reflector cleaning

Seems like a silly question. Both my FL6 lamps are little used though both have dirty reflectors. Not wanting to damage the plating, what is the best way to go about giving them a non abrasive clean?

I wash mine with car wash detergent (but I’m sure dishwashing detergent will be fine); then I use a soft cloth and Autosol (very gently).

I use Nilglass glass cleaner. OK the reflector isn't glass but Nilglass is completely non-abrasive and the solvent is gentle (IPA I think) but it gets rid of the greasy film. A quick buff with a clean microfibre cloth and the job's done.

I used a soft cloth and naptha. Evreything I ever read on the tpoic was "do not use polish"

For soot and stubborn grime? Naptha and a terrycloth, gently gently.

I recently spent 4 hours over 3 evenings polishing an R55 reflector with autosol. It was in poor condition and a tiny amount of plating lifted. Otherwise it was a case of going around and around and around about 3" at a time until it was even and brilliant.

And I hate bl**dy polishing too.....

As others have probably said the plating can be very thin and easily polished through, so yes, be extremely careful!

 

For cleaning sooted glass or dirty windows, damp newspaper does the job very well.

 

I cleaned mine with warm soapy water, then gently polished it with Brasso, it is none abrasive but I was gentle. Came up great
