Hi all. So I have a couple of vaporisers that look like they have been tig welded around the OD of the nipple disk. Did tilley ever make any like that or has someone machined the end off and tig welded a new( home made ) nipple disk ? - I'm calling it a nipple disk but I'm guessing that's not its technical name lol. If it was a genuine unfettled and I'm guessing later made vaporiser, has anyone ever tried repairing a worn out one in this manor ? Thanks.
It sounds as if it could be a Korean version. Is the knurled collar at the bottom brass or steel. AFAIK the UK Tilley originals were brass.
Tilley haven't "made" anything for quite a few years now, they have simply assembled outscourced parts. Your vapourisers are genuine parts - that's how they come. I have never heard of anyone repairing a vapouriser in this manner.
@Aielman They are the ones you get if you buy from Tilley International Like Henry said, everything is outsourced now. Not brilliant, but everyone that has bought new and had problems have had 'good' ones sent by return of post.. By 'good', I mean ones that work ok
Maybe I clumsily phrased my reply as I have assumed that the new Tilley International vapourisers are made in Korea. Heaven knows why! They could be made anywhere.
Yup - I bought two, one OK, one next to useless. They did send me another by return so can't complain. No idea where they are actually made. NOS not always about when you need one. C
Thank you all who replied. Well that clears up the genuineness of the vaps I was wondering about and its nice to know that tilley will replace faulty new ones as well. So thoughts on the viability of making use of a old knackerd vap in the way I mentioned? That being machining the retaining folded end off to remove the worn nipple/jet disk and tig welding a new one in. Sounds simple enough. ? The harder part would be fabricating a new one with the correct size jet . Anyone know what the hole size should be BTW ? Guess I should mic up a pricker/cleaning needle to give myself a idea huh... Yes, I’ve done that to create a spare ‘short’ vapouriser for a Tilley CS56 stove, featured HERE. TIG welding wasn’t necessary, silbrazing worked fine. You asked @Aielman about jet size. 0.19mm for a Tilley lantern, 0.27mm for the CS56 stove. Stove vapouriser tip left, lantern right. Corresponding pricker tip sizes show the difference too (stove pricker top). John
Wow thanks for sharing that press call! Given me much more information. Good news on not having to tig if silbrazing stands the heat seeing as the tig welder I used to use was at my old job. Also never seen a stove like that- looks like something else to look out for. Now I've got to locate a drill bit that size, 0.19mm if memory serves is about 7 to 8 thou in old money so I reckon a old number drill would be the best bet. Got some charts somewhere... @Aielman If you’re giving that a go you might want to try my technique of lining an oversized jet orifice with a short length of hypodermic needle. THIS gauge chart shows that a 29-gauge needle has a bore of around 0.19mm. Here’s the process. A hypo needle has this type of chamfered point. It can be used to ream its own clearance hole (0.33mm for the 29-gauge needle) by rotating it between finger and thumb. Silbrazed in place. Trimmed and cleaned up. Microscopic section. Surgical stainless steel, it’s very resistant to further wear.
@presscall thanks for that further information. That trimmed and cleaned up very nicely, good job you made of it Will remember the surgical steel idea as well. I've got to finish my house before spending to much time on this vap salvage project or my wife will have stern words but once its all signed off I will be trying a repair or three.
