I am in the process of restoring a 1960's Tilley FL6 which has the aluminium/silver matt finish. The paint is in poor condition so I need to strip and re-paint it. I would ask if anyone has found a paint particularly suited to this application. The VHT paints are out as they need curing at high temperature but it is only the flue area which gets particularly hot. Your suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
@R100 not all VHT paints need curing at high temperatures, I have used the Simoniz matt black and silver both have cured without using an oven. However I have found that the silver isn't very resistant to paraffin and is a little shinny for my liking. But I have used the matt black on the burner hoods of both AL21 and FL lamps then used an engine paint for the remaining as they don't get as hot. But to answer your question I haven't yet found a good VHT silver....
Hello. I have used this paint which is heat resistant to 800 degrees, The paint hardens at room temperature after 24 hours. There is no contamination from the kerosene. Do not know if this paint can be purchased in GB Tom
@podbros Hello. There are no problems. Even if the lamp burns for an hour no changes can be seen in the paint. I forgot to write that the paint should be applied without primer. The metal must ofcourse be ground down so that there is no rust. Wipe the item with alcohol before you paint the first coat, and paint it again after an hour. Do not sand it after you painted it. Tom
Thanks Tom. I can't find your specific paint in the UK but I have found somethng similar which I have ordered. I will report back with my findings.
