Hi all, Just spotted this number for sale on eBay. Never seen a lamp like this...what on earth is it? It looks like a hybrid cobbled together from various parts? The gallery is most unusual... Best, Shane
Well, that one certainly takes the biscuit, to call it a Frankenstein would be an insult to old Frank.
The tank is from a 1950's Tilley R-1 radiator, the control cock is correct for that period, but the pump may be from WW2., in that time of shortages pumps and other Tilley parts were often made from a mixture of steel and brass, but it's also possible that the pump is a modified replacement Tilley pump from the 1970's and the link below shows some of those in their unmodified state. The handle and the gallery are home made and the burner is held into the gallery with Tilley PL-53 air buttons, the heat deflector has been modified. The globe is held into the gallery by one grub screw. In my opinion, whoever made this lamp was skilled. 1960s or 70s replacement pumps
But I guess it will never run since the heat deflector goes just that: take away the heat from the top part that needs the heat to keep the gas a gas.
The gallery looks like it could be from a tilley tl 120A , if so it could be paint over chrome which may well peel when lit. Ian
Yes, that also occurred to me, but it does not have the shade supports which are on the TL-120-A gallery, it's possible that they were removed so that the PL., air buttons could be fitted, or perhaps the shade supports were damaged, I'm just speculating, but it seems pointless to me to remove undamaged shade supports. This is mine, I made something unique out of some obsolete parts I had just laying around, as for the comment about the gallery it's not from a tilley 120A it's actually an AL60 hood modified to look and perform like a gallery, was just something I had in mind and I really enjoyed making it. Just seen this post posted on here so only just registered to the forum because one thing I don't like is sitting by watching people speculate especially when it's wrong it makes me feel very frustrated, anyway thanks for the positive comments they mean alot.

I don't know why you would think that, Wim - those heat deflectors were official Tilley after-market parts. But if I was playing the Devil's Avocado, I'd argue that the extra surface area of the deflector would, in fact, absorb heat from the heated air currents/exhaust gases passing upwards which would then be conducted to the burner dome, thus maintaining gasification rather than preventing it. In fact, they make bugger-all difference to the way the lamp runs. Trust me, I speak from experience...
