My first attempt at a brass cap as a replacement for the steel cap for a Bialaddin 300X's brass "pepperpot" hood. What do you think; honest opinions now! Does it sit OK to the eye, even though it is a different shape to the original steel cap? Bashed it out from the base of a scrap Tilley 246B. Steve.

Looks like it sits pretty well to me steve, i reckon its a far better job than i would do. Its a good utilisation of old brass from redundant tanks too

Well done, from here steve, you can only get better still, looking forward to MK 2

    Regards

Looks good to me Steve. I've just bought two small brass dishes for 99p that I'm going to drill and fit and see how they look. Need to search my nut & bolt tin for a couple of brass bolts first. I'll post a pic in the next couple of days. Your's looks to be a better shape than mine, but I'm lazy.

There's a few of these out there with brass ashtrays on top. I used to polish the a---e out of the lamps, fit an ashtray and flog the result for £70 at steam rallies. Must have sold a few dozen in the 1990s. Always amazed me that folk actually bought them for that but they did. Never looked right to me and that top you made looks a lot better. ::Neil::

There's a one on ebay right now with a home-made aluminium cap which looks really good.

    Seen that one too.
Somebody from here ? Its worth to ask what a small batch would cost.

It looks like it is pressed alu.

But neil's solution will work too: ashtray or dish from a camping set. You "only" have to find the right size and shop....

The originals are vitreous enamelled steel, Wim. It's quite rare to find a decent one...

Is it possible to get these and other steel tops re-enameled. There must be plenty of people wanting hoods and tops re-coating.

Okilly-dokilly, I'll send one to you when I get a minute - might be the weekend.

You can start with the easy one and then move onto the curved ones... ;)

Yes, we agreed not to have an auction-watch forum here. I didn't realise you were referring to the eBay one mentioned above, Wim...
