I was wondering what other people use their Lamps, Stoves and Heaters for.

I use lamps to light my garden and as shown here
    http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/3014
I also intend to use them on camping trips along with my heaters and stoves.
Also as the gas for patio heaters is getting very expencive I intend to use R1's when sitting out in the garden in the summer evenings when it starts to get a bit cold

I use especially one stove pretty much on a daily basis. It's a Radius 20 that I use to make a quick cup of coffee with a Bialetti. It actually works better with a paraffin stove for a Moka maker than to turn on the electrical one, that's the only reason. And it's more fun, of course.

A large Optimus blow lamp is used to start the hot bulb engine I have in my boat, and therefore used frequently the entire summer.

When it comes to the lamp bit, it's not uncommon that I use a lantern when I do some electrical works where I have to shut down the circuit also for the light in a room, or works on the service panel itself. A good lantern gives a better working light than many battery powered dittos.

I also use a small lantern in my boat when the summer nights begin to get dark again in August.

Radiators are also mainly used in the late summer as it also is getting colder to sit outside in the evenings. Our annual crayfish party's are held outside, and in late August to early September. A couple of radiators help keeping people outside all the night.
That's really the only use I can see with a radiant heater up here.

Hi OZZY all my collection of classic stoves lanterns and blow lamps are all used i use my various stoves i pick one from random mainly for when i visit a steam fair or vintage rally in the summer for making a brew i have used one in the shed with a old faishioned double boiler glue pots, and some time just fire one up for fun,my lanterns and bialaddin bowl fire is used for light and heat in my shed when i am out there doing any fettling or pother work as they produce a great amount of light and give out a nice bit of heat as well which a modern electric bulb does not and the light it produces i prefer than a LED or simmular lamp and i would use for camping i have used a couple a few years ago in doors when the street i live and surounding are had a power failure, i have a good collection of old paraffin and petrol blowlamps i use for various things from decorating heat and quenching of old stove burners to remove the carbon soldering i have a Max Sievert paraffin brazing lamp i use for silbrazing i my self prefer to use my collection as they are in use as equal and at times better than modern equiverlant's and usualy cheaper to run and they to me are far more enjoyable and interesting to use than modern day equiverlant's

    Thanks Christer and Mr optimus.
I know people who use tilley heaters in the home like the r46. I like the Idea of using them in the home and I would use them too if only my wife shared my pasion for saving money Err I mean for Classic Pressure Lamps and Heaters.
But they are fun, effective and cheap to run. I also like the Idea of getting one over on the greedy gas and electric companies :D/

I'm using a Bialaddin Bowlfire in my garage right now to take the chill off the air as I work in there.

Later, I'll bring it into the house and leave it running in the kitchen - for no reason at all other than simply to hear it hiss and see the glow from it.

I've used Bialaddin Bowlfires and Tilley Radiators from time-to-time when the central heating fails - not often, but it's a good reason to get the 'artillery' out.

I use various lanterns when I go to my store at night because there's no electricity supply in there...

Mine are used in the garden on late summer & autumn nights, and also when I go to Living History events. As our group does 1914 these are to "young" really, but hey, they produce a lot of light! :D/

    Best regards,

    Wim

Wim, you just have to get a pressure lantern which are from the period!
It's not easy, but they do exist.

But I guess they won't be historically correct anyway. I would assume that wick lanterns were the thing preferred during WW1, right?
    Hurricane style.

Hi Christer, yessir, you're right! only wickies were used, and candles. I have a model 1910 "lampe de tente" (french made, used in their tents, during the war the name changed to "lampe de tranché" or trench lamp) but prefer to use the Swiss "faltlanterne" as they are not so rare   . I think the pressure lanterns were not trusted by the military as they were, ahum, "to complicated" with to many parts that could go wrong :? . For cooking, I use wick stoves and pressure stoves as well (like my pre-1911 Primus N°5) but the 'real' army cooks used wood & coal only. But, it's all part of the fun! :D/

    Best regards,

    Wim

...and the stink when it runs out of paraffin.

A bit strong now, but the house'll just have nice aroma in the morning, which reminds me of when I was a lad in the 50s and went into Mr. Watson's hardware shop in Chester Road, Sunderland.

    Aah, happy days... :)

I use my Primus 991 for lighting up the shed, and when I feel like I have to walk a bit. It works really well. I also have an Optimus 930 chrome which works like a dream.

I have an Optimus 8 and a Primus 71 for a nice cup of tea.

However, I still have some lanterns I yet have to clean up, like an Optimus 930 with handgripp, a Wunderlampe and a few others. :)

Well I have just discovered a new use for my heaters. Both R22 and R46 will get a quick service and any R1s I can find because my central heating boiler has just sprung a terminal leak. I can see a week or so of arguments with my landlady over who pays for what here and then a wait for action so it looks like we will be kero heated here for a month or so. My landlady is my youngest daughter and she can squeeze a Pound 'till it cries for help better than anyone I know. Nice girl but those celtic genes will be cringing tomorrow when she finds out her old dad is getting cold. ::Neil::

You won't feel the cold much with that R46 stolked up Neil. Not if what Mr Smithson tells me is anything to go by :)

I don't think I own a BBF any more. Pretty sure they all got traded out a while back to Malcolm in exchange for machining work.

Oh yes both R22 and R46 pump out serious heat. One running at full chat is quite enough for the living room here.

This boiler stuff is serious grief. We finally got the leak stopped this morning. Had a plumber round who has drained the system and we can start drying out the carpet. Getting cold out here too now. Managing with just an R1 for now but the big toys will be out this evening for sure. ::Neil::

    Ditto. :(

When I'm home alone I tend to light up a table lamp or two as well as a heater in the winter (all Primus btw). Otherwise I usually light a lantern or two when we have barbeques in the summer. A couple of stoves and lanterns get used for camping trips as well.

I also 'test' as many lamps/lanterns as I can. Lanterns can hang outside so get to run for a fair while, but the lamps don't get a chance to run for too long.

Cold here now too. I am running an R46 and an R1 which are just keeping the living room warm enough. Mind you cold is relative I guess. It is probably around -2c outside tonight so not perhaps Nordic temperatures but quite cold enough for me. ::Neil::

I use my lamps as a back up for power outages, camping and hiking. My Coleman 550 stove gets heavy use in the summer when I hike.

Sorry to hear about your predicament, Neil.

It reminded me of a photograph taken by a (now sadly deceased) CCS member of his accommodation during a camping trip. I didn't get a copy of this image at the time although I've been after one for a while. A brief request on CCS brought this to me earlier today:-

    Yes a truly cool picture.

Better tonight. Maybe 5C out there and I have the room up to 24c with an R1 and R46. Should be OK this week and Friday I am going to borrow a serious Coleman gasoline job that whacks out around 4KW all on its own. I am actually not flush with heaters. I only retained a very few and I think there is only an R22 in reserve now but one of the burners is missing its ceramic so I probably won't use that one. ::Neil::

Nice picture of the Igloo, I use my Lanterns and Bowl fires outside on Caravan trips, my wife likes them now, especially the bowlfire.

When we are siting in the garden a lantern will be used and I have made myself a gas bottle patio heater so its even cheaper (wood logs and offcuts cost nowt) to keep warm and because I instaled secondary air supply its pretty smoke free as long as the wood is dry.

I did try and persuade the wife to use a primus 535 stove in the caravan awning for tea duty but she did not like the old paraffin smell if it did not light first time (thats why i bought that Tilley Twinfold off Gary at the swapmeet so I can replace my ancient camping gaz twin burner tea maker)

The blowlamps get used for metal bashing, heating duties in the garage.

Had a bit of a do last night for the first born's 21'st. Good excuse to light up the garden. Bit of a trial run for the summer. had 6 lanterns and 2 R1's for patio heaters. (to keep the smokers warm on the patio) Had a good night and the garden looked great :)

    Roll on the summer :D/

Spent some time in a hunting shelter today with a friend. I used my paraffin converted Coleman 200A to "pre-heat" the space (8' by 8') while we got a fire going in the stove. It snowed and blowed, and we drank our beers and told our tales :)

Generally speaking, I use mine for atmospheric garden lighting, and every so often, for cleaning up after the cat!
