Petromax 882E

hello all,
****Petromax 882E- error in title
I am new to this forum but I got this lamp (converted) recently. Very hard to find any information on it- from scanning the forums here the glass shade/globe seems to be unusual or potentially difficult to find. What was this used for?
It’s obviously been messed with is no longer an oil lamp-resprayed etc- is it valuable?
Think it’s only recently butchered- fresh paint ... €70

Well you can find information here in this forum. The petromax 882 is rare.
70 euro is a steal.

So you better get the paint off again and convert it back to kerosene.

882 and 883 lamps are rare as Wim says so it will be well worth the trouble to plug and seal the tank. You have the major parts of a very uncommon pre WW2 Petromax which deserves restoration. ::Neil::

Plugging the hole in the tank is not a big thing for a collector to do. It's the missing burner parts that you really need.

 

Ok ... I can see these goin the way of other random buys- I’ll get sucked into the underground world of pressure lamps trying to find the missing pieces!!!

 

If he hasn't got the lamp parts, feel free to remove two of his.

 

It's a great and rare find.. has to be worth at least what you paid for it, judging by reactions...

the paint is fresh so shouldn't need much removing.. Contact the seller, you never know

Thanks all - unfortunately the missing parts cannot be sourced ..attached photo of tank.. might strip the green paint but I’m not sure what’s under it- rust perhaps ..

 

I doubt it, they're all brass.

 

That hurts, and what about the top ? How far it that ruined?

 

I don’t know what I’m looking at tbh but I attach photos..the ‘riser’ containing the burner I presume seems sawn off above the black valve of the black star type knob.... the red knob seems to have its valves etc intact???.... any hope for it?

on a positive note the glass globe is in perfect condition- no pictures online of such a shade ... is it decorative or designed to diffuse light or both... reminds me of a lighthouse lens... also Art Deco look to it?

 

Well I actually thought about this: what is "modified" to house the electrical stuff?
So how is the electrical cord brought up out of the top.

 

had a look... he’s drilled a hole in top of tank also - not good!

 

I expect someone could graft the burner from a Petromax 829 on top of it, rather like has been done here:

Here are images of a 300 candle power version of the mutilated remains of what was once a thing of great beauty now in your care.





Modern parts can be used to replace the butchered remains of the 'lower vapouriser' (riser) though the fuel feed tube will have to be swapped with the original one which will require soldering skills.
Use the black star type control and the bits that go with it.
The upper vapouriser and flame tube for the rapid preheater are still available.
The burner and air tube will be a different matter.

I don’t know what to do with it -I really like the glass globe - id like to try and repair it but it would be a major challenge & ive no experience of how these work ... but everything is for sale if the price is right I suppose !!!

 

@Alpyne Well said. Speaking for myself the globe’s not of interest but the lamp’s certainly something I could restore as a paraffin burner again with some custom-made or adapted parts, silbrazed together where appropriate.

 

do U think the globe is original... I think it looks a bit odd on it ?

 

I’m not knowledgeable as others on here but I doubt it’s original to the lamp. Hopefully someone could confirm that?

I assume a plain white glass sphere would be correct.

 

The globe as well as the "thing" on top to make it stay in place is not original.
The owner is not a lamp collector and not or never (?) intended to repair it. He is a saleman and simply wanted information for the ebay auction.

For the record I’m not a ‘salesman’ and in fact have never sold anything on eBay if you check my profile ... unlikely I could ever repair this or even try to do so safely ... I collect vintage - industrial items as a hobby and have enjoyed researching this lamp... there appears a lot of interest in it and it’s for sale @ starting bid of €25 if anyone wants it ... it’s a bit of fun that’s all!!!

How else can I sell it?

@Alpyne presented a legitimate enquiry over on CCS, was redirected here where we took interest in the lamp and recoiled at the damage to it. Subsequently after discussion he decided not to attempt repairs himself or keep it.

An online auction is likely to increase the pool of potential buyers and get a better price. So he decided to sell it and online? Nothing wrong with that.

CCS and CPL surely shouldn’t be exclusive but inclusive in welcoming whoever drops in and not delivering a barbed parting speculative stab at their supposed motive for their visit.

Hopefully here it may find its way to a person who is willing and has the skill to restore it.
