Picked up a new old stock / new in box Aladdin glass chimney from a local junk shop. Took this opportunity to also take some pics of the other designs I have found on Aladdin lanterns. The green lettering is front and back. Please feel free to reply with other designs!
@Buckaroo That’s a good spread of Aladdin glasses. I think the Phoenix glass might be from the UK. Cheers Tony
Yes, I've got Phoenix globes with exactly the same marking on my several Buflam lanterns (and a spare I found in a box the other day - also in red). The lanterns were made by Charles Twigg & Co., Ltd. in Birmingham, UK but I suspect they would have bought the globes in. I've no idea where the Phoenix glassworks was but presumably also somewhere in the UK. They did supply globes to other lantern manufacturers, too...
Phoenix glass was made by the British HeatResisting Glass Company based at Bilston in the Uk. Most known for their domestic items of heat resistant glassware similar to Pyrex. I believe they started in the 1930s and finished production in the 1970s.
@BigStevie That’s great information to know about Phoenix glass. Do you know if they made other lantern/lamp glass? Tony
@Tony Press I don’t know of any catalogue they issued for lantern globes, having said this I’ve never looked for one! My connection with Phoenix was with their tableware when I bought a pile of it at auction once. I’ll have a dig around and chat with a pal who is into glass and see if we can turn anything up.
Great info, thanks all. And nice to know Phoenix came out of Bilston @BigStevie , not far from my hometown of Stafford.
