Yes George and Colin,The seller and reference gallery here seem to agree that it is a Vapalux 300 1943 lamp.
I got paint stripper and put some on to the affected areas of the brass hood last night.
I didn't leave it on for too long and scrubbed with steel wool and then washed and dried it.
    Will try again today.
I bought another Vapalux 300 X lamp yesterday and am bidding on a vapalux vapouriser too.
The vapalux 300 X lamp appears to have the original globe with a hole and the smaller spirit dish.
Thanks Colin for showing me this one on ebay.
    Thanks everyone very much.
    Have a good day..

Oh dear Fiona - you are going down the "rabbit hole" and becoming a collector. Be warned there is no way back but you really do sound like you are enjoying it all. I think many of your reported problems are or have been seal related. If you want to depend on the Tilley and Vapalux lamps I would suggest buying a seal kit every time you buy an old lamp. Unless I know the lamp has been restored and has new viton seals fitted I routinely change them as I buy them. That way I know if there is an issue it is likely to be something else.

    Nice to see your photos

    cheers

If the first statement is true then it sounds like one of these (and the Tilley equivalent) would be the order of the day... ;)

Fiona, God willing, and if that flows i shall attempt to coach you through getting that Petromax , "Up and Running" as when they are, they tend to stay that way for a long while and function sweetly when they are..."tuned". I have just now finished overhauling one of my Sons Petromax and one of mine, both old....dirt/small particles/rust in the tank/poorly adjusted control rod were the issues with both (with vapouriser on mine coked up to the hilt)...i shall also help you with putting the rapid backon your new 829 if that flows. Blessings, RxR

Just seen your post in the other thread about your new lantern- it's a 300 rather than a 300X, probably made late '44 to early '45,and would have originally been painted a light chocolate brown to match the enamel cap. Under the rust and cruft it looks pretty much original. There are a couple of nice examples in the gallery.
