Bought this and had it shipped. The guy packaged well, but I believe fedex opened it to inspect. He put a lock on the outside and it was missing when I picked up. The glass was chipped and the top was smashed. Filing a claim with fedex. can original replacement parts be acquired for this one?
Hi Chad I just replaced a very thick Petromax Glass on my Relum lantern which is much better than the original chinese glass. I purchased it from Base Camp in the United Kingdom. Also you may find if you look on Face book Market place there are often old lamps and parts going cheaply. Best of luck with you quest.
Hi Chad. You can get modern petromax replacement globes easily enough. As well as other aftermarket ones. Similarily the cap assembly is still made, but it may be slightly different. I have had sucess in unbending damaged caps but it will never look the same. Ecomonically it is probably a write-off but if you are prepared to live with its wrinkled it may yet be a good lantern. have a look underneath to see if the J tube, inner cap, frame, ceramic nozzle etc are distorted or broken. good luck C
Thanks for the feedback! It’s too bad that this happened. I believe the carrier removed it for some reason but I trust the shipper and he said he seated the lantern properly in the metal case. What a shame.
That's a shame, but in my opinion, that hood could be fixed and that bit of broken glass could be super glued back in place.
Well assuming it was send in the BW green army box: was there also other package material around the lantern ? You must use a lot of force to smash the lantern inside a steel container without damaging the box. The seller has put in the wrong period globe. All parts for the 500cp version will fit. But the matt grey finish is unique for this model. These are/where sold at army dumps depots NOS for 100euro and they are good lanterns.
I couldn't see any damage the metal army box at all. My theory is that the shipping company removed the lantern, perhaps dropped it or didn't seat it properly back in the metal case. I like the matte gray finish.
That's a shame... don't suppose you could straighten it out by hand? Sometimes you can do it if just take it slow and easy. I had an Aida like that and managed to get it worked out. I've all but given up on the mail, my electric bill was late, credit card and bill are all hosed up. They tell me they never ever got my last bill and now it's overdue! Issued me a new temp card because there was a fraud charge on my old credit card and now that damn card won't work!! To hell with it all! Sorrry, time to climb down off the ole soap box!
I have straightened two of these by hand thus far....gently does that.... Here:- You can easily get parts for these, new globes etc in the U.S. from stockists who supply parts for Petromax, Britelyt & Possibly Wenzel, The first two are great glass, i don't know about the latter....you do have to order the right size for your lantern...yours is a BW829B like mine above, the 500c.p.glass (4 3/4"x 4") is your size. They have all the other parts too, otherwise you can go to Base Camp at Britain or Pelam at Europe, then you will have to pay post, etc.
Thanks for the encouragement about saving this nice lantern. When I am able to spend some time on it, I’ll ask about how you straighten it.
Welcome, Chad, that's a lovely lantern you have, mine above was dropped in the forest on its hood, lit, the thing kept burning and the Luxor mantle survived for months after the fall that did that damage! Old Luxor Mantles (from the paper envelope) | Classic Pressure Lamps & Heaters
@Rer Isi Rer sorry that happened to yours. It’s sucks that it’s damaged even before I used it once. I know it’s a small thing and it’s all good. Just irritating.
Nope it is "clamped". Or rolled inwards at the inner rim. This clamped/rolled/crimped construction can be pulled apart. Sometimes it does its on its own, sometimes it will never, sometimes with some force. For taking a lantern out of a box it is the easiest way to grap the lantern to pull it up and the best way to drop the lantern when it detaches itself from the hood.
You know, I haven't even checked yet. But when the hood is damaged like that, does that usually damaged parts underneath as well?
Good Evening, folks, i realised Chad, that i had not sent an image of how that lamp looks now, here are a couple, taken this evening. I used pliars small and larger, and grip type tools, gradually coaxing that to shape. Regards, RxR
@Rer Isi Rer Thank you for the pictures! It provides me some hope that I can repair mine. I am still trying to get some compensation from US carrier Fedex for the damage. I may contact you privately later when I am able to begin trying to fix it.
