    Just wondering, should there be a gap around the top of the mantle on Tilley R1

    All three of my burners have that gap.

    I don't know really. My example is like yours and as all the flamelets from the burner are contained within the mantle, I see no cause for concern.

    All 4 of mine are the same as yours, so I believe the answer is yes.
    If I'm wrong someone will correct me and let us know.
