Looking at what I'm going to do with this tired old soul. I'm approaching this slightly differently, because I dont know whether To paint it and give it a face lift, or just tidy it up a bit and get it in working order. It has a transfer On the fount but its almost invisible, so it would be no great loss. I don't see this as a lamp I will light often. Globe is a german one which I dont think is original . Last week I cleaned it up a bit with solvent and some detergent, pumped it up and it held pressure for an hour but needs new seals and pump washer. Today I put a cheap Chinese mantle on it to test it, managed to light it but it was a struggle, didn't burn very clean and pulsed badly with a considerable halo around the mantle, so time to give it a bit of a once Over. Just wondered if anyone knows what output these lamps should be?
@rayw From memory, 300 cp. It sounds like the vapouriser needs a good clean out. A 350 cp Petromax or Optimus jet will fit should the existing one need replacing.
I was wondering if the mantle I used might be too big. If it's a 300 cp then I will clean up the vaporiser blow some air down through the system and try a different mantle Thanks
@presscall The shot of your lamp lit is miles away from mine, but gives me something to aim at, I was wondering about doing a similar job to the one in your link, but I thought I would first concentrate on getting it working as well as I can then to take my time deciding about the paint etc. Looking at yours I think it brings it back to life and I am learning towards giving It a new lease of life, the existing Paint is not great and the transfer Is no longer readable so what's to loose. The globe on mine looks like a replacement which has been put on after some incident back in time.
Take some good photos of the transfer and measure it. At some point it might be possible to recreate the design and get new transfers made.
That's a very good point Nils, it would be good if I could give it a new paint job and put a new transfer on it, takes away some originality but it would perhaps put it into a condition where it may be preserved for quite a while.
Once I can get back into my summerhouse (the bliddy door-lock's jammed again! ), I can supply images of the decal with dimensions. There's a chap in Chesterfield(?) called 'artyfartymarty' or something similar who does reproduction decals. Others will be able to supply fuller/correct details. I don't think those Buflams are any different or more difficult to fettle than yer average P'max clone. I've had them running so they must be easy...
Thanks @David Shouksmith that would be good, I think I would spray it dark gold then add a transfer then laquer over it, hopefully it would stay tidy.
Hi @rayw ... Nice lantern ! ... To be honest, it looks ok in the photos? .. I realise that sometimes they can be flattering.. I seem to have the other effect whenever I try...
I'm afraid the picture flatters it a little, the paint is broken in several places and is starting to flake on the frame it seems to be burned and quite dark, I was going to leave it but I am pulled towards tidying it up. And its something to do in lockdown.
