@Jean J posted a photo of a Tilley tag that came with a Tilley SL61 Hospital Lamp in this thread: Tilley SL61 Hospital Lamp [Photo @Jean J] Thanks, Jean. These bits of paperwork and paraphernalia (or parafinalia) that come with lamps often hold information that is useful in understanding the production sequence of lamps and lanterns, as well as their use and provenance. My question is: Can anyone shed any light on what the numbers and codes mean? Are they military? I also noted the designation “Mk. V”. I wondered whether that related to the lamp or to the kit. Contributions to this discussion greatly appreciated. Cheers Tony @BigStevie @Henry Plews @M.Meijer @JEFF JOHNSON @WimVe @Steve Wood @David Shouksmith @Gary Waller @Anthony @Mackburner
A label with typical military idiom; the JA. looks familiar but I am out of anything Tilley that could have this designation.
Back in the early 1980s I was tasked with checking the condition of UK Civil Defence vehicles and parts that were being kept in storage. I visited a number of sites that basically large stocks of mostly new items for use in case of conflict. The wording on the label looks military as does the code sequence. That there is a hand written memo ‘globe ok’ also adds to its military provenance. I know this is an unused lamp, that it has been checked and marked as ‘ok’ is very much similar to my work with vehicles and parts. Checked and marked. I’ve got a pal who is a military collector, I’ll ask him about the label too. Interestingly, you can see where a label has been stapled to the lid of my lamp box.
Hi All Tag with poor to see date AUG 1955 on bottom right, Jeans seems to lack date mark. Mark on inside of the box. Mark on base of lamp that came with this box, but tank bottom seal joint pre 1957 style, Tilley-Owl-England on side of the tank. Steve.
IIRC 40's and 50's army Bialaddins are stamped with "WO Cat No JA XXXXXX" on the collar along with the broad arrow and date, which would seem to confirm that it is army nomenclature (RAF ones are marked AM 21C XXXXX).
and definitely until 1961 Bialaddin Model 305 W.O.Cat. No. J.A. 5557 1961 Tilley and probably up until sometime in 1964 when the W.O. (war office) became the M.O.D. (Ministry of Defence). War Office - Wikipedia I assume that the letters J.A. refer to a particular category within War Office CATalogue Number as in this example
