Tilley PL53, it looks to be in nice original condition, a good clean and a new seal kit and you’ll be on your way.
@John pesat If it were me, I would leave the tank with its original finish - just clean it with car cleaner or soap and water, then rub car polish or beeswax to protect the paint. Use a magnet to see if it’s steel or brass. Tony
Hi John and welcome to the forum. That’s a nice original looking PL53 lantern you’ve got there. It’s a great feeling when they pop into life! Enjoy the fettle, Stevie
The WW2., PL-53 was produced in both brass and steel versions and mixtures of both. Wartime shortages meant that Tilley and many other companies used what they had and what they could get. The GF., control cock which is fitted to your lantern was first introduced in 1940. This link shows WW2., pumps. 4 Tilley WW2., pumps.
Paraffin to run it, meths for preheating. I was about to say you'll need a preheater, but I see you know that already! Nice find, looks to be in good shape for its age.
The pipe up to the mantle is a bit rusty I presume this sprays fuel need to find somewhere that does a full service kit now
The pipe up to the mantle is known as the vaporiser it turns the kero to a gas and contains a (pricker and spring)to clean exterior, if desired with emery/steel wool, they can block internally with carbon where they are heated by the mantle & burner . Test the lamp (with globe removed pressurize with fuel in tank, when cock is opened a jet of fuel should be seen) before attempting to light do a dunk test (submerge pressurised font in water and look for bubbles) leaks
@John pesat Why do you think you need a new vapouriser? Rust on the outside is no issue - just sand it off. Carbon build up on the inside can be cleaned out. But an enlarged jet requires the vapouriser to be replaced. Tony
