So what, if any; is the relationship between Primus and Aladdin? I apologize if this subject has been discussed before; I’ve looked but I can’t find a definitive discussion about it. I ask because my Primus 1001 has a bail with a hook in it that has been described as an Aladdin bail. Now given that it attaches with a simple loop and can be replaced easily; it’s just too much of a coincidence that others in the gallery have the same bail.
When you say Aladdin, do you mean the Australian Aladdin lamps? The Australian Aladdin lamps were made by Radius before WW2, then they started to manufacture their own when supplies were a bit precarious. So no connection to Primus other than Radius is also a Swedish manufacturer and probably had a close look at the competition before producing their own lamp.
That’s a tricky staircase indeed; it does explain why they are so similar. I saw the Aladdin donut lamps listed under Sweden; thank you for the clarification Nils.
@John The Aladdin donut made in Sweden was made by a different company than the Australian Aladdin (Aladdin Industries Ltd (Australia)), which began in the early 1920s and at first imported Aladdin wick lamps from the US and England. The Mantle Lamp Co (USA), makers of Aladdin wick lamps, also manufactured pressure lanterns. Cheers Tony
