I went away for work last year for what was meant to be 6 weeks. 16 weeks later I am back home. Local auction sites had some great stuff over the last few months. I passed on anything above 25 euro, but still managed a nice haul. Difficult to keep thinking of new excuses to send my wife off to pick them up! Any here they are... 1st up a brace of Petromax. An 826 and 828. Neither complete. Next up, a couple of Hasag 351L and a post war copy. I will break them down and take some comparison pics later on. And here is my new favourite a Standard 6022. This is something unusual for around here. I did find a manual a year or two ago, but have only seen one other similar.
Here are some more things I forgot that I bought. Front and back of envelopes pictured. There are a few doubles, if anyone is interested to swap or trade.
You have some excellent finds including the mantles. I've considered adapting a picture frame to display some of my prettier mantle examples. Some of the packets were very decorative... and some were extremely boring!
Colin. I did that some years ago and they looked very good framed but in less than a year some had faded so badly I had to put them all back in the boxes. So I would advise you not to frame mantles for display. Maybe in a picture album or in plastic wallet type files where the light can't ruin them. ::Neil::
Oh?? :/ Perhaps some good quality printed photographs of them would fare better?... Not the same, I know..
I had thought of doing the same but could see that some had faded already. Maybe @ColinG you could use your art skills to make a nice biscuit tin design. Anyway cleaning works went pretty well on the Petromax lamps. I had thought to use the 826 as a donor, but somebody must have loved it in the past. They had a real struggle to keep it going with what was available at the time. The carburettor system is taken from a very old Optimus. Then drilled out to fit a coach bolt. Brass bushing made from an old bullet casing and a 1940 5 Kopek coin converted into a washer. The burner hood is missing. Must have been donated on when the stress cracks in this one finally got too bad. The bottom and sides are heavily cracked. Can only assume a previous owner was heavy handed with the Brasso. The hood itself, although dented has a nice blue-purple heat colour. No numbers are scratched into the bottom. The 828 is almost all there. Even the pricker is in good shape. I will borrow some bits from other lanterns and hopefully get it going
Hello Mark, what mantles are you looking for as I have some spares,Veritas, early Coleman silk etc. warm regards Alex
