I was so pleased to find these five items, (especially before interstate visitors descend on us ), that I forgot to check them before bargaining; and I also forgot to photograph them. When cleaning started at home, I found the Coleman 249 fount to be holed beyond repair, likewise the 282 Pump Tube was also damaged inside, and beyond saving. The Monitor blowtorch has not been examined as yet, nor the Primus Gas Lantern. Getting rather disappointed, and kicking myself, I started on the remaining lantern which has turned out to be an early American 242 with no markings on the fount, save for vague stamps of 3 4 4 underneath. A good general cleanup, dunk test, new filler cap seal, the teasing out of the pump cup with neatsfoot oil, and she fired up nicely. Another one saved. A little humdinger. Looks like a later hood. Cheers. Oh dear. Can't seem to upload files lately. Perhaps they're too big, or they don't have the relevant file extension, & c, & c. Funny thing, guys in the USA talk about picking these up for a song - US $25 - while prices are going haywire over here.
Post pictures when you can, we can get your 242 identified for you. Local finds can sometimes be found for a low price still, it depends on whether the seller is aware of EBay or not. But consider it’s no different than finding an X246A on the outskirts of London or a Handi outside of Perth. Steel tanks on American lanterns have always been a bane; it’s really what started me towards collecting Tilleys and the like (brass tanks).
Just a small haul. An early 3 - 4 242 Junior with a later hood, a 249 U/S, a 282 also U/S, a Monitor blowtorch, and a Primus Gas Lantern.
