Hi I am in the US and I have a 1957 Tilley RH57 I got a gasket kit and the gasket was to thick to turn the control cock enough for it to be clocked properly. I made a rookie mistake and used a wrench to get it to turn further and pulled the valve stem part out of the main body. I cannot find a replacement part. I did find a control cock for a R55 and it looks nearly identical except it comes apart more places than mine. Can anyone tell me if that r55 one will fit my rh57?
This is the one I have Oh thank goidness! Thank you! I have been collecting Coleman for 10 years and just got my first 2 Tilleys and I'm so out of my wheelhouse with them. They are super cool looking but I have no idea where to start! I guess it's by ordering that part I broke huh?
So is it the thread on the bottom that goes in the tank or the shaft and knob on the side that is damaged?
The shaft and knob is damaged. My husband is gonna solder it for my since the mechanism is still working. If I can get a replacement part that would be better.
I can't get a screenshot of the one for sale on eBay to load for some reason. It says it fits a R55 and an R1 and a couple others.
OK, the picture of the one you showed will work. It doesn’t have to be adjusted to any specific location, just enough to keep you from getting burned if you need to prick the vaporizer while it’s running. The valve itself is not what we would call a positive shutoff; it’s only purpose is to prick the hole in the vaporizer; only run kerosene in it and leave the cap loose when not in use. If the cap is left tight and the lamp is stored in a garage it will build enough pressure to push kerosene out the vaporizer tube and makes a stinky mess. As the lamps got newer they replaced the single screw in valve with a valve and bushing, the hole in the tank accepted the bushing and the valve screwed into the bushing. They are a ton easier to adjust right to where you want them. That’s what you saw on the R55.
The first picture is of the one I took out of my heater. The one I want to use I can't get to upload. I'm trying to figure it out. I
There it is! This is the one on eBay that I want to use. Sorry I am as bad with technology as I am a with Tilleys
OK, that’s a standard control; the black knob will unscrew off so it’s not damaged if it’s to be soldered.
Actually I take that back, is that a reproduction from Taiwan? Let’s do this. Is this what yours looks like?
The top picture I posted is my actual one, and yes the second one is a reproduction from somewhere overseas. Mine doesn't have the ribs on the very bottom where it goes into the fount like your picture. It also doesn't come completely apart. So this is my actual one
Don’t order one just yet, I believe the one I have will work for you and it’s in Texas. It’s originally off a Kayen but I believe it will work for you. If one of our more knowledgeable members will verify that while I am testing it then it is yours.
Oh my goodnes you're a lifesaver! I am in Washington State. I had emailed the fettlebox and 2 other companies that say they specialize in tilleys and similar, with no response yet. I'll just calm down and wait till I heat back from you. Thank you!!!!
That's not my understanding of it. What is the purpose of the valve at the bottom of the control cock if it's not to cut off the fuel supply?
@Amanda M Brown Hi and welcome to the forum. I think you’ve got all the answers you need. Two really great Tilley products you’ve got there, will there be more Tilleys? Stevie
I’m still torn on as to whether it actually works 100% of the time but as they say it’s better to be safe than sorry. My garage often reaches upwards of 40 in the summer without the vent open and with so many lamps I’ve always had a leaker.
I've never interfered with one in over 20 years. I suspect the majority don't work although they will have at the beginning of their working life. The top of the Tilley pricker wire is shaped to fit snugly into the underside of the jet plate at the top of the vapouriser and that's where the other fuel control seal is. That, and the control cock valve act as 'belt and braces' on a Tilley. Just to be clear, the Tilley control cock IS a control cock because of the valve at the base. The similar looking Vapalux / Bialaddin component isn't a 'control cock' because it doesn't have any valve and turning it has no effect on fuel flow. It is, solely, a pricker control / jet cleaner. Compare the different designs of the fuel uptake arrangements on Tilley versus Bialaddin / Vapalux...
Thank you David. Perhaps that’s where I got the thought from. I remember that the Vapalux was marketed as a cleaner only to sidestep a lawsuit.
Yes and no. Willis & Bates actually won that law-suit when they were taken to court by Tilley. It was actually to do with the end of the shoulder of the pricker wire sealing into the underside of the jet plate rather than anything to do with the control cock/jet cleaner per se. That was a patent owned by Tilley but during the war, patents were relaxed when making items for the Government in connection with the war effort - which W&B were doing. They stopped claiming that their pricker sealed the jet but as far as I can tell, continued to make them exactly as before because they still sealed the jet - and still do to this day, around 80 years later. It's all in Ian Ashton's W&B book on Blurb. Unfortunately, he showed a copy of the court proceedings (rather than a transcription) and it didn't come out too well in the book and is rather difficult to read...
