Picked this up over the weekend, it was described as an “old oil lamp”, when I first saw it I thought it was a cobbled, modified effort, especially how the frame supports are bent due to the extension pieces. However upon looking through the lamp gallery I noticed that @Mackburner has the very same lamp. It looks to have originally been BR yellow as there are remnants of paint. It’s marked 161XA and Made in England underneath. I have just cleaned it and replaced the seals, I think I will leave it as it is. There are a few dents and base is slightly bulged out, so I’ll go easy on the pressure when I light it.
Nice! I like the straight sided tank on them. I have just picked up an early X246 and will be leaving as is also.
Hmmm..... a conundrum lamp! Like you mention, identical to the lamp Neil listed in the reference gallery, down to the same stamp on the base of the fount. A lucky find Gary! Be interesting to to hear what @Mackburner has to say about it. Any ideas @Anthony ? @Henry Plews ?
That is a very good find and yes that is the same large tank BR lantern I have. From memory I think I know of maybe three or four so far but for sure they are not at all common. I suspect they were part of a Southern Rail contract with Tilley which were all painted that distinctive yellow and as such never catalogued so we don't have correct Tilley model numbers for this or the other X246 tank type marked as BR but without the extended globe cage and kero preheater. This one isn't even marked as Tilley although it clearly is of course. In fact I am not even sure the Yellow BR49 we know of is the correct model number because the X359 type hood used may mean it had a different model number when Tilley sold it. Maybe that was BR59?? Who knows? Just another Tilley conundrum yet to be resolved I guess. ::Neil::
