I have to ask. Some service kits provide 2 small O rings for the control cock on a Tilley. Some service kits provide 1 Larger thicker washer, which I am using no problem. I am wondering why two types, and is it ok to use both? I recall @David Shouksmith saying You can get away with one of the small ones sometimes. I am trying to understand more about Tilley lately!
It is possible to just use one small O ring, but I prefer to fit two and the early XN control cocks need two.
It's easier for after-market suppliers to supply O-rings they've bought in rather than having to cut piddling little seals from sheets of Viton etc. In this application, I think that O-rings are fine to use because they're firmly held in place by the spindle and gland nut. In my opinion, this is the only location on Tilley lamps where O-rings can be substituted for correctly sized and cut seals - except, perhaps, in an emergency. YMMV...
The beauty of using two O-rings in this application is that you don’t need to exert a lot of torque to get the seal. I was talking with Bernie Holmes from TW Sands (Melbourne) at the recent lamp gathering, and he said he’d stared using the two O-rings for this job a long time ago, and that in combination they seal better against both the spindle and the packing nut. Cheers Tony
I've got one X246B and the 2 O rings badly leak fuel. But one of those longer seals is OK no leaks whatsoever. It just feels a bit spongy when You turn the knob!
