    Bagged this Tilley X246A and in good nick. It looks like its been sprayed gold judging by the pump. The tank looks OK if it has been though. I've just done all the seals, and holding pressure. Tank is not bowed out so all good!

    Yes, it's been sprayed with gold paint - by Tilley. If not them, then someone's managed a damned good match! :)

    Hi Johnny
    Very nice! There should be a date stamp on the base?
    The control cock and pump also look right for the later x246a types :thumbup:

    Brass tank, steel handle and globe cage!

    Could be worse though - Tilley could have put a steel baseplate in the tank like some other manufacturers did... :roll: ](*,)

    @podbros It's hard to make out. All I can really see is the 63.... Pretty sure its Feb. It was difficult to take this pic, as I had to do it from underneath.

    Looks like 263XA so February 1963.

    No-one knows what the letters mean but in the X246, A and B series there seems to be a vague correlation so XA would be most likely to be a X246A but I wouldn't stake too much on it, especially with other contemporary Tilley products...

    @Johnny19

    What does this line of stamping say?

    @Tony Press I think it’s ‘made in united kingdom’ Tony
    (I hope it is anyway)

    @podbros

    I am expecting that’s what it says, but am seeking confirmation.

    Cheers

    So post the move to Northern Ireland and exactly what you'd expect for an X246A.

    I must admit, I did also wonder what it said so downloaded and rotated the pic to find out. Then I kicked myself... :roll: :doh:

    Why did you kick yourself, David?

    There is a bit more depth to the question I asked, related to the stampings on the bottom of Tilley tanks, especially after the move to Dunmurry. Hence me wanting to confirm the stamping.

    A few more data points are required.

    Cheers

    Tony

    Because I already knew what it said - or should have known and/or been able to work it out from the original photograph, after having looked at the markings under post 1961 Tilleys for over twenty years... :roll: ](*,)

    David

    Have you ever seen a stamping under a “Dunmurry” tank that is not “Made in United Kingdom” stamped in a straight line?

    Cheers
