I need advice about repairing a leak in the base or base joint of my Tilley lamp. I have still to do a pressure under water test to see exactly where the paraffin (kerosene) leak is. This is a brass tank so I'm guessing I will need to solder it by using some type of a gas torch rather than a 40W electric soldering iron? Ian
Welcome to CPL Beemer. Yes a torch and low melting point solder (usually lead based) And protect other nearby soldered parts with wet rags.
A soldering iron (Gas or Electric with about 12mm dia tip) can be more useful than a gas torch . (Pictures help us see whats going on)
Welcome from Queensland Australia @Beemer You need to carry out that dunk test first to ascertain where and what the actual leak is. From this, with clear pictures, we can better able to advise on the repair method. Looking forward to seeing your pictures. Cheers Pete
I am a little concerned that using a blowlamp just after emptying the tank might introduce carbonised kerosene onto the inside walls. I wondering if I should use some type of cleaning wash (?) before I start the repair? Ian
Ian Your repair method, and tools, will depend on what type of leak you have and where. Defining the position of the leak and its origin are the most important aspects of this exercise. Once that is known, better or best advice will follow. Tony
A problem that can occur with some (mostly later) models of tilley fonts is due to over pumping where the tank base bulges and tears the solder seam between the wall and base inside the tank (Once this has occurred there is no safe way to rectify these damaged tanks ) It is apparent if the base of the tank is level with or below the bottom rim .
