Other than stumbling across another Primus 1020 for parts with a decent hood, does anyone know where I might be able to get a spare hood? I have had no luck with my posting on the wanted section.
The only way to find a decent hood is just like you said. Find another 1020 with a good one. Enamelled steel was a good idea at the time but it's not a good combination for lasting many decades. Heat expansion and contraction eventually cracks the enamell allowing moisture in which starts the rust. Once that starts there's no way back.
Hello, a Veritas 350 hood will also fit a Primus 1020. The link below shows the instuctions and a diagram for the Veritas 350 lantern, Jeff. http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/1492
Hi All! I'm quite new to lamps, but aren't the hoods restorable? I'm thinking shotblasting or something, and then painting with heat resistant paint? If that's possible, I think I might have a pretty tin-wormy 1020 hood laying around my garage.
Others will know more than me but I don't think you can ever get them back to original. I've used black stove paint on a couple of mine but it goes matt when heated. However, for a working lamp it does the job. Of course, if the lamp is to be for display only and not lit, you can fill any imperfections and spray with gloss paint.
Ok, well then, I suppose the next step is to have it enameled anew. Not the thing you do in your own home, but I remember enameling things in "wood and metalworking class" in comprehensive school, so it can be done in a fairly ordinary kiln. The powder used should be possible to find online.
It's called 'frit' in English - so probably that's 'fryt' in Swedish, and likely with a funny little 'o' thingie above the 'y' - and is actually powdered glass. I'm sure someone over at CCS had a home enamelling kit a few years back and used it with a limited degree of success, but not on anything as ambitious as a complete hood. Best of luck and let us know how you get on...
The primus hood had completely rusted apart. Thanks for the suggestion of using the veritas hood as these lanterns are available in NZ.
Ah well, I'm not personally in urgent need of enameling. Looked up the hobby kits, but they seem to be made for lower temperatures than proper enamel. Nice that you have an option with the Veritas hoods, Nzlantern. Good luck with the remaining restore of your 1020!
I've had good luck with Independence Porcelain in the USA. The owner, Jeff does them for the ICCC. It takes a few weeks though, and the color is close but not exact. Dan MacPherson
Well since an original Primus hood was out of the question, here is my 1020 with an Aladdin hood as a substitute, which is the best alternative.
