Hi all, I have had this Tilley X246B for a while and works OK but the brightness is very poor, so this morning I attempted to sort the problem. I thoroughly cleaned the fuel cock, and pick up tube. I then tried a different vapouriser from another Lamp, and it's still very poor. I can only assume it's something to do with the Burner? Any advice please?
Like @Anthony pictured - think obstruction. Whether you take it apart or not is up to you as sometimes they won't go back together without leaving leaks. However you could try the top of another x246b ? (do I recall you had two of them ?)
It's strange. Both lamps work fine when the Hoods are swapped. Put em back to normal and its feeble again. I know the obvious answer is to leave them swapped, but I like to keep them as they were. And to solve the problem!
leave the burners swapped over ? - sounds like the feeble one has a burner and a flow restriction that together cause the visible issue ?
Check that the air intake tubes are not obstructing the fuel feed when placed in “feeble” mode (ie look down the barrel of the spigot on both burners; see how they sit on the lamp and vapouriser). Tony
@Johnny19 If it helps I just took a very dirty guardsman burner apart and found a very dead, old but quite large spider rattling about under the dome. Not even sure how it got in there at the size it was- unless it did some growing once it got in...
I tried a different burner and no change. I'm wondering if its the control cock, but can't see how that could be blocked. The pickup has been run through with an old pricker rod and that's clear. Even a different vaporiser. Later on ill try another fuel cock, but its not the burner. That's clear.
I have had these not open as fully as they should - usually dirt. I even found a rubber seal in a vapalux one (no doubt a previous owner thought that this would a be a good idea). Check the filter too these can clog up - sometimes with sticky nasty.. you will get there I am sure...
I have had more than 2 alu control cocks that obstruct the fuel to such a degree that it significantly affects the light output Sometimes there is a ‘sweet spot’ where if you turn the knob a little one way or another you get more light! If that happens there is nothing for it but to scrap the thing, as they are cheap and there’s lots more out there I would try a complete strip down, clean tank out, new fuel and work through bit by bit.. Use the working bits off others lanterns that are ok and go from there? Just realised I’m only a few miles away if you need any bits or a hand or anything? Only too happy to help if I can Regards Pb
To be honest I've always suspected the control cock from when I got the lamp. Its had a complete strip down and new seals. Its only when the CC is fitted to that lamp that its dim. I'll try another one when I get the time. Thanks all.
