I am starting to get a few bits and pieces of surplus kit, in a recent purchase I found this burner and mantle i suppose from a bowl fire but I've not seen one like it.
Could Anyone shed any light on it?
Not sure if the mantle is home made but it's well constructed and sturdy.

    Hi Ray,
It’s off an early Tilley radiator and the wire mantle looks very well made as well

Have a browse in the reference gallery , you should see a few there
    Cheers

Thanks for the input I thought it must be Tilley,
I wonder if the mantle was constucted secretly in the maintenance shop of some factory, or if its an actual Tilley product, it certanly looks like it was made to last.
Im a bit reluctant to takle it apart I dont want to detroy it, I was wondering about its age.

Looking through the gallery I see three different radiator burners this style, the flat top and the conical top ones, I'm guessing this is the oldest one, but I only see the asbestos mantles, and the globe type wire mantle, so I'm thinking this is a lovingly home crafted edition, interesting to wonder about it's history.

I have a burner and mantle just like this on my IF54. Gives out a lovely glow and is very robust. Hang on to it!

That is very interesting, I wonder if it was produced by Tilley.

I'm still a little "raw" when it comes to pressure lamps, so I've never seen a mantle made of wire before. I just assumed they were all cotton. Would the wire be coated with thorium or other incandescent material? It's a pity that some manufacturer couldn't make something like that today....what a boon to a lantern/lamp user!

This one is for a heater, rather than a lamp, they work in a similar way but only heat red heat, if you look up tilley R1 on here it will possible to see some good pictures of them.

Yes, they're not intended to give out light, just heat, although they do produce a cosy glow as well.

The wire mantles replaced the original knitted asbestos mantles probably sometime in the early '60s - I can remember being sent to buy replacement asbestos mantles when I was a sprog. A Tilley R1 / R1A was the only heating we had in our bedrooms at the time...
