Petromax Rapid Super 829/500 (Finland)

Is it Chinese version or original German?
There is 10 beams in the sun, but doesn´t have "Made in Germany", only "Germany".

The build quality looks good to me, but some other members will have more information for you, the hood and the pressure gauge are from an Optimus lantern.

If the sun has 10 rays and it says Germany on the tank, then the tank is from Portugal. The carrying frame and the red hat are from China. The globe, baffle plate, holder for 2 hole glow mantle, pump button, rapid lever come from older German Petromax. The pressure gage is Swedish. I've never seen the Rapid substructure like this bevore.I think it is possible that it is one of the first Petromax from China. (2000)?

Your lantern is probably made in Portugal by Hipolito. Is the "G" at fount mark mirror inverted???

 

Yes it is.

 

The inverted G is not an indicator of production from Portugal. You can see it on @leo ' homepage" 500HK "on his Portuguese Petromax 827.In my collection, too, all Petromax made in Portugal have a completely normal G on the tank. I think it' s a Chinese mishap. At the beginning of the production you were not yet familiar with the Latin characters. The last Petromax tank from Hipolito/Portugal was not copied correctly.

There is an extra point to the star that usually designates Chinese manufacturing; to me anyway.

10 rays plus Made in Germany means made in Germany
10 rays plus Germany means made in Portugal
11 rays plus Germany means made in China
It is probably a very early Chinese-made tank. The number of sunrays was copied correctly at the beginning. The number of beams was later increased from 10 to 11.

So, if I understood correctly it´s rather than made in a factory, put together by some individual with bits and pieces from here and there? To me it doesn´t make any difference, I like it as it is. It´s a gift from a friend and valuable to that way.

This is my first pressure lamp and to me this whole scene is totally new, lot´s of things to study.
My plan is in some point to restore this lamp in working condition. Every tube and nozzle and valve need to clean thoroughly for sure, but what else there is I need to focus on?

Please take a photo of the number stamped on the bottom of the tank.

 

There ain't any stamping at bottom, I can picture it later.

Please take a look and take a picture.
If the tank does not have a 6-digit or a 4-digit number on the bottom, then it is not a Petromax tank.

 

Here`s a picture of bottom, there aint any stampings, only that round mark from maybe a sticker?

 

6 digit code likely under that sticker

 

As it is what I also have under some of my lanterns it is a spot, round, where there is no plating done.
So not a sticker but bare brass.

 

I guess its where fount was fixed for nickle plating during production process.

That sounds logical to me, as there´s no plating in that area.
