Well, I just received my Anchor Petromax clone yesterday. I won't bore you with quality details as that's been covered before, but I WILL say that it appears to be a perfectly serviceable lantern that lights immediately and is uncomfortably bright. The only quality issue I could find was the fit of the ceramic burner to the lantern. I had it burning and suddenly the entire burner/mantle fell to the bottom, exposing a very nice blue kerosene flame under pressure. After letting it cool down a bit, I put some anti seize on the threads and attempted to screw it back together. To my surprise, I could insert the burner almost full depth before I could engage perhaps 1 1/2 threads to secure it. It's secure and burns properly now, but I ordered two more from another source and will see if they fit better. Now, about the girl........there's an old Petromax ad in the upper right hand of this forum page. I thought it was rather nice......somewhat provocative, but emphasizing the product. I went looking for a reproduction and found another that's nowhere near as nice, so where did this one come from? Is it available as a reproduction, suitable for framing? Uh, I'm married, so asking for a friend............ Best to all, George
The problem with the ceramic burner could be the metal holder it screws into. If that's the case I have a spare from an old lantern you can have. Don't want anything for it.
Thank you for your generous offer Colin, but the threads in the holder appear to be full size and well cut. Let me check the new burners when they get here and if I have the same problem I'll contact you. But, no one knows where the Petromax girl is?
Thank you for taking the time John. If you have an extra in good condition that you'd part with I'd be interested. In this age of digital scanning technology, it shouldn't be hard to enlarge the image with good resolution and make copies in at least an 8 1/2 x 11 size.
@G. Andreasen Don't bother about new burner. If old burner has no crack sinply reuse and fix it with some steel wire. Wind wire around burner, and fix other end above mixing chamber at the mixing tube. This works like a charm at my hodacs szeged and a Geniol 150.
Well, I already ordered the new burner(s) but that sounds like good advice. I'll wrap a piece of fine copper wire around both. Thanks!
@G. Andreasen No copper wire. This doesn't stand the heat near the burner. Must be steel/iron wire. E.g the simple wire you use in garden when planting
I would also like to have the aida girl brightening up the workshop. How about a good quality scan for the reference gallery for members to enjoy.
Just a quick update.......I received two new burners in today's mail, and both fit MUCH better in the lantern. The threads engage properly and I can screw it in fairly tightly. The lantern has been burning brightly on my back deck for almost an hour now with no problems whatsoever. I also acquired an Aida off Ebay that requires a "few" parts.......as in glass, complete burner assembly, top, etc. But it has a magnificent glob of solder around the fill port, which really adds to its artistic appeal. (translation: my enthusiasm got the best of me and I didn't look at the pictures close enough) Guess I'll be posting in the "wanted" section here in the near future.....
What AIDA modell did you bought? For the 250, 350 and 500CP "petromax" types you can use ditto parts.
It's an Aida 500 cp, "Rapid", that has "made in Germany" stamped in the fount. It has some major problems to be sure, but I hate to see such a well made piece of equipment just tossed away........so I "rescued" it (translation: put on a shelf until I can begin the search for Petromax parts!)
