So my latest guardsman acquisition was a bit of a dud. But it was cheap, and it had the wing pump cap and plastic pump knob. Tank was filthy inside but came up well with caustic soda. The ventilator is servicable but very weary. Vapoursiser very rusty and jet enlarged so went into the pile of old ones. The cage - well after a day in weak citric acid it became apparent that the rust was gaining on the metal. Smooth hammerite has bought it some more time this side of the scrap pile. The real disappointment was the state of the burner. Air inlet tubes in an S shape, dome rattling and mantle support disfigured. A search online for bits revealed that for a few quid more than what people were asking for second hand I could get a new made modern manufacture (original style) one. In the interests of science I bought one. Pretty well made. All brass. I also only had a couple of peerless DT-140 mantles. As the pictures will show they are a think a little too large unburnt, or maybe I am missing a trick ? After burning in the mantle stayed a bit deformed but it gives out plenty of light. Anyway pictures follow - dissect away ! Chris
Another one rescued from the scrap pile and working ok , the old guardsman lanterns are pretty resilient even if they have been badly abused. Ian
Thanks fellers - I treated it to a NOS vapouriser yesterday as the slight flaring would not go away. Now it is my 'tattiest' Tilley with the newest internals ever !
Well done. Love the pump fitting and the new burner obviously works very well. Good to see it running so well. Iain
