This is a small Demon Strike Light carbide headlamp. I used the last of my carbide to see if it works. It’s a nice little lamp. Now I have to find a new supply of Calcium Carbide... Cheers Tony @Sedgman
@Tony Press Beautiful lamp Tony. I love carbide lamps. My latest bicycle light. IMPEX Carbide Is it difficult to buy carbide in Australia. Here in Denmark it can be bought at timber merchants, gardeners and several other places. Here it is mainly used for the control of moles. Do Moles Occur In Australia? Carbide has become very expensive in Denmark, as it is now considered a dangerous goods. Tom
@Tom Pedersen There are no moles in Australia; and carbide is difficult to buy. I liked your Impex when I saw it. It’s a lovely lamp. Tony
@Tony Press Thanks for your message Tony These are old pictures I have uploaded. It is renovated now and the dish in the lamp is as new. It provides as much light as a bicycle dynamo lamp. Tom
Noted with interest Tony. Wasn’t the Demon stove I was anticipating but quite interesting and working too. Well done. I did a few caves at Murindal in the seventies and someone on the trip had a carbide lamp but I have never used one. I had torches (flashlights) and some candles from memory. M100 was one of the caves we went down as I Abseiled first and I remember a snake at the bottom. @Tony Press
I have one carbide lamp, it was used by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. I took apart years ago to clean it up but never quite got around to it. Everything is in a bag somewhere... I’ll find it some day, like that blind squirrel in it’s hunt for an acorn - I’ll stumble over it!
@Tony Press Nice little lamp and I use to use one caving many years ago. I've looked but can't find them now. At Staffordshire Reef, Bernie mentioned that he may still have some carbide in the warehouse.
Martin I spoke to Bernie yesterday. He may have some, but doesn’t know the condition it’s in. I just collected up all of Kerry’s and it’s now suitable only for including in my complete organic fertiliser mix! Cheers Tony
